I think he means something similar also in style. Tetsuo and The Thing, for instance, are wildly different, although the themes might be similar. Possession is full of these performative moments and overall confusion. Tetsuo is pure shaky-cam psychosexual insanity and very hard to follow. Nothing like The Thing's conventional and linear style.
