The site's collection system is by far the most useful of its kind that I know, but there are a number of redundant public collections, with identical aims and often ~90% overlap that are more or less concurrently updated. A few examples:
Teensploitation 1 star, 46 films, last updated Nov 02 2014
Juvenile delinquents / teensploitation 0 stars, 103 films, last updated May 12 2014
(FTR 'winning' teensploitation can count on copious overdue updates from yrs troo)
Incest 1 star, 79 films, last updated Nov 15
Incest 2 stars, 42 films, last updated Mar 18 [orphaned]
Pixar is a bit of a mess, with multiple dupes. The bottom three on that page look like they could just be deleted without losing anything.
(I notice this is no longer a problem for Mumblecore, as for years there were two large, nearly identical collections but now Moribunny's reigns supreme. Progress!)
This is obviously something that couldn't be automated and would require a not insignificant amount of effort in 'consolidation' & eminent-domaining non-orphaned collections, but I think it's worth looking into.

Re: Collection clean-up
Thanks for the suggestion -- this is something we've noticed, too. It's not a big surprise, as we've never put any restrictions on the public collections our users can make, but it's not ideal.
We'll probably move to a system, where we at least notify users about "similar" collections, before they create a new public collection.
