advanced filtering

Hey!

Can we add a new categorization for films so we can have even cooler filtering? The Genre list has all the broad genres (war, drama, comedy, etc) but none of the movements! :D

An example of a Movements list would be:

  1. German Expressionism
  2. French Impressionism (aka avant-garde)
  3. Italian Neorealism
  4. British New Wave
If we're doing this I guess I should throw in the request to expand the genre list as well with subgenres.

For instance, maybe I'm in the mood for Film Noir but don't want to have to filter through all the not film noir crime movies when searching.

This would definitely need to be community sourced for applying labels to movies since IMDb doesn't tag any of them in these ways, but I think it would be a killer feature.

(ps. good luck with the new UI)

That's what collections are for.

I guess, but searching through user generated collections isn't quite the same as checking the "avant garde" or w/e box. The Movements category is an actual list similar to Genre in that it has official recognition in the industry.

This type of thing would actually be a trivial feature to enable if the data already existed in the database, but it doesn't so I would assume that this is not going to be feasible anyway.

It was just a thought.

Yeah, your suspicion is right :) That kind of specialized data doesn't exist yet, so it would be difficult to implement a filter in the way you envision. Until we build out the data more, the best idea is a collection! Thanks for the suggestion, though!
