Adjusted Popularity Ranges

Post by mwgerb »

I think the popularity ranges need to be revamped. Currently the most popular range (10/10) contains 3,464 titles. It's hard to think that "Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009)" can be considered as well-watched as "Jurassic Park". This also makes it difficult to perform certain searches. For instance, if I wanted to see the best PSI of "mainstream" (for a lack of a better word) films, there's no way to separate "To Kill a Mockingbird" from Renoir's "Grand Illusion".

This should be very doable, because the lower popularity ranges are currently very granular. I recommend combining several of the lower popularities, and adding more above where the current ranges stop. Here is one possible recommendation:

Current:
(1/10) 0 ratings
(2/10) 1 rating
(3/10) 2-5 ratings
(4/10) 6-15 ratings
(5/10) 16-50 ratings
(6/10) 51-100 ratings
(7/10) 101-200 ratings
(8/10) 201-500 ratings
(9/10) 501-1000 ratings
(10/10) >1000 ratings

Proposed:
(1/10) 0 or 1 ratings
(2/10) 2-15 ratings
(3/10) 16-50 ratings
(4/10) 51-100 ratings
(5/10) 101-200 ratings
(6/10) 201-500 ratings
(7/10) 501-1000 ratings
(8/10) 1001-2000 ratings
(9/10) 2001-5000 ratings
(10/10) >5000 ratings*

*This currently corresponds to 804 titles but should over time approach the 1,000 most popular titles on Criticker.

Fully support this. Titanic and Must Love Dogs don’t belong in the same popularity bracket. I could even see it starting at 10,000 ratings, since the most rated movie has 30,000+.

Thanks for this note! This is something we try and review occasionally, and it might be time for that.

We'll take a look soon!

Instead of having named tiers, would it be better to be able to filter by number of ratings instead? Like a filter for movies with at least 500 ratings, or for movies with at least 1,400 ratings, or for movies between 800 and 1,200 ratings. Just let the user enter an amount for either/both values.

That's an interesting idea ... I've added that to the notes for this enhancement report :)

In my comment above, I suggested a filter for movies with at least x number of ratings, but I meant to also suggest a filter for movies with less than y number of ratings. The goal being the user could enter a value for x, or for y, or for both x and y.

Examples:
- show movies with at least 500 ratings.
- show movies with less than 500 ratings.
- show movies with at least 500 ratings, but less than 1,000 ratings.

That might have been clear in my post above, but I wanted to clarify just in case. Thanks.
