That's how it always goes.

Well I think there has to be a point in cinephile's life where there aren't many notable directors to add anymore. With my actual list I'm already slowly running out of names. Or will my list be populated with notable Sudanese New Wave directors somwhere in 2018? :P

"The more you know, the more you know you don't know." I've seen this as credited to Aristotle, but who knows.

My old list is on the previous page so I'm not going to repost it, but here's those filmmakers from that list that I've seen films from in the last three years:

Howard Hawks (Seen the most from him, a total of 4, which run the gamut from great to terrible)
Robert Bresson (Two excellent films)
David Lean (The Bridge on the River Kwai was great. Still have yet to watch Lawrence of Arabia; its colossal running time makes it hard when you're always busy/not in the mood like I've been. Explains my recent ratings.)
John Huston
Robert Altman (Two films, both mediocre)
Krzysztof Kieslowski
Todd Haynes (Boring)
Alexander Payne (Mediocre)
Ming-liang Tsai

Trying to compile a new list would be overwhelming. There's just too many damn directors!

i love malle, rivette and kusturica. i loved the one film i've seen by kobayashi. i was indifferent about the one film i saw by tsai. weerasethakul is quite interesting.

i have not yet seen elaine may or lina wertmuller because their films aren't available to loan/rent. suppose i'll download them.
there are plenty more tat i'd like to see obviously, but those are the ones that right now feel like big gaps that i need to fix.

here are some others that i know i should see at some point but honestly am not expecting that much:

ang lee
steve mcqueen
michael mann
william wyler
luc besson
bryan singer
elia kazan
george cukor
clint eastwood
spike lee

and so on and so forth.

i saw something by the two lees, mcqueen and eastwoood, and they all sucked, as expected.

Ernst Marischka (1893-1963)

Underrated director from Austria-Hungary probably best known for the great Sissi trilogy but involved with dozens of other films, only a few of which are on here.

Well that's impressive! You've ranked only 725 films, and yet the only "notable" missing director on your list is some tremendously obscure Austrian-Hungarian fellow whose most popular film here has a whopping 90 rankings.
