I won't try to defend these as good recs, and they're not horror movies, but i am reminded of the antagonists from lord of the rings.

and there's an episode of misfits that made me think of the Jason from halloween trope

Slowly moving physical threat that always knows where you are? I'd say It Follows is probably the only one to take that idea so far. But there are plenty of movies about supernatural curses that might be what you are looking for, except they are usually not physical.
I'd say Ringu is a good pick then. And The Thing.
Maybe Prince of Darkness.
Matango.
Night of the Demon.
Viy (1967)
Demon Knight
The Masque of the Red Death
Bewitched (1981)
Any of the Blind Dead series, except for The Ghost Galleon.
