Dude not cool I just lost 40 some odd titles of the adult kind whose very existence in the first place gleefully defies the kind of Jerry Falwellian censorship plight that now blights this once revered institution.
Look and listen no further than the sage wisdom of the Diggler Diviner on the legitimacy of the genre as a genre.

Good to know that Mubi and Letterboxd are still DTF.

Re: Adult Films
On top of the question whether some deleted titles should be restored (which is obviously important, and about which former replies here have made good arguments), I'd just like to add that it is disappointing to find that not only one's scores but one's reviews have been deleted, and without any warning. Considering that such reviews, by users willing to take the time and make the effort to compose them, are a significant contributor to the value of the website, it seems unfortunate to remove them without notification. I've got at least one review removed and I'm definitely feeling the loss, even though the title I reviewed is far from being good.

Re: Adult Films
What the hell, this is a mess.
I've seen (and rated here) 5 films directed by https://www.criticker.com/people/Yuji_Makiguchi/, but now I can see only one. None of this was porn. Most of them were softcore, but also https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2076836/ is missing and it's just a slightly exploitative crime movie. And there are a lot more obscure Japanese films deleted (most of them pinkus) - were they all marked as "Adult"?

Re: Adult Films
This question from back in 2008 still applies. After all those who by default don't opt-in for adult titles are not harmed in any way whatsoever as they won't ever see those titles.cagedwisdom wrote: ↑Mon Oct 13, 2008 1:21 amIMDb permits adult films, it just has a filter that is by default set not to show them. Why couldn't Criticker do this as well?

Amusingly, with all of us discussing the porn policing, the code that highlights a forum topic at the top and center of every Criticker page right now (whether you're logged in or not) says: "Currently at the Forum: Adult Films." Probably not words that the admins and advertisers want a new user to see first and foremost when exploring this site. Just an example item to my point that censorship is the best way to bring attention to what is censored.

Re: Adult Films
How does this scare off users and advertisers less, if the adult/porn titles are now in the regular database ?

let's post to keep the topic on top, hoping that the site owners reverse course. It's sad to censor films. What's next? Censoring sci-fi films or political films? That's not what criticker was all about all these years ...lineuphere wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 2:33 amAmusingly, with all of us discussing the porn policing, the code that highlights a forum topic at the top and center of every Criticker page right now (whether you're logged in or not) says: "Currently at the Forum: Adult Films." Re: Adult Films
Hey everyone,
Reading through the threads in this topic, it was kind of becoming clear that we didn't go about implementing our new policy towards adult titles in the best way. Especially, the fact that we didn't warn anyone ahead of time.
But also, we took way too big a hammer to a problem that required a more nuanced approach. Not all "adult" movies are porn, and anytime you're dealing with a judgement call, you have to exercise a lot of caution. In this case, we did not.
That's our bad. In order to address this, we've run a review all the films which were removed, and re-added all of those that were not listed as "Adult" on IMDB. That was roughly one-third of the removed titles, and as a result we've restored over 500 films and all their associated film ratings.
As anyone who's spent time on Criticker knows, we're a very small team. We simply cannot do all the moderation which allowing porn would entail. So, the line in the sand is going to be: does IMDB classify it as an adult title? If so, it won't be added to Criticker.
Is this a faultless strategy? Of course not. IMDB is definitely going to have titles classified as adult, which are straight-up "wrong", or with which you might subjectively disagree ... and vice versa. But overall, it's necessary for us to rely upon a more authoritative voice than our own. And in this, we could use your help -- if you spot something which is obviously "porn", and it hasn't been flagged as such by IMDB (and hence, Criticker), please let us know.
You might be thinking, why remove these titles at all? Weren't things working properly with the filters and restrictions already in place? The short answer is: they were, and they weren't. Things were sneaking through, and those were proving very damaging to us. I'd just ask you to trust that there is a lot is going on behind the scenes, and this is something we need to do for now, if Criticker is going to grow. Eventually, it's something we may revisit.
Hopefully the restoration of many of the adult titles shows that we are listening to you, and want to do right by our community. If (and when) we make mistakes, we'll do our best to address them, and own up to them.
Thanks for keeping us honest!
