The writer Jade Gardini is back in his native country for the funeral of her mother, Sara, who committed suicide. Including clashes with his father, with whom he ended the relationship for some time, and Rachel ambiguity, lovely manageress of the hotel owned by the family, the woman tries to figure out why he pushed his mother to suicide. She discovers that she, in the last period of his life, had become adept of a sect and suffered from delusions of persecution.

As the Second World War continues to rage and fascism activity blights Europe, Lenka and her brother becoming increasingly vulnerable targets to anti-semitic sentiment.
