Biography: Polanski began his career in Poland, and later became a critically acclaimed director of both art house and commercial films. His mother was murdered in the Holocaust and in 1969 his pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson family. Later he directed Chinatown which received 11 Academy Award nominations. He finally won an Oscar in 2002 for The Pianist.
