Ashokan (Mohanlal) is always in competition with his cousin Appukkuttan (Jagathi Sreekumar). Ashokan is sent to Nepal to his uncle as an astrologer predicts that if he stays at home, he will commit a murder. Once there, he finds that Appukuttan is already there claiming to be Ashokan. 'Lal Salaam' chronicles the personal and professional life of two life long friends and communist party workers Nettur Stephen (Mohanlal) and DK (Murali).

When the local police isn't able to solve the death of a young married girl Omana (Lizy), the case gets handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). CBI officer Sethurama Iyer (Mammootty), who is assigned the case, and his crack team consisting of Vikram (Jagathy) and Harry (Suresh Gopi) gets down to solving the mystery behind the death.

When the Malayali captain (Lalu Alex) of a foreign ship contacts hotshot laywer Bhaskera Pillai (Mammootty), about an amnesiac castaway on his ship, Basheer (Jagathi Sreekumar), whom he believes to be a Malayali but who has no documents to prove so, Bhaskera Pillai sets off on a crusade to deport Basheer from the ship, and faces various threats and obstacles in the bargain.

After a rich business man James (Ratheesh) dies in mysterious circumstances, his relatives tries to prevent James's wife Susanna (Urvashi), & their son access to James's wealth by claiming that Susanna isn't legally married to James. Susanna enlists the help of George Korah Vettickal (Mammootty), an out-of-work lawyer to fight her case. Vettickal faces big troubles and threats from James's relatives as soon as he takes on the case, and initially falters, but later decides to fight back.

After the death of her husband Vijayan (Devan), the owner of Vijaya Cotton Mills, Radha Vijayan (Seema) is faced with huge trade union troubles & a possible closure of the mill. As per their family friend R. K. Shenoy's (Jagannatha Varma) recommendation, Mohan Cherian (Mohanlal) is appointed as the new manager. Mohan attempts drastic changes to resurrect the mill, which pits him against the ICTU trade union leader Raghavan (Mammootty) & other unions who exercised control over the mill workers.

Ashwathi Varma (Ambika), a reporter for 'Sunday Mirror', tries to expose the underworld criminal-political nexus & the gold smuggling racket of Sagar alias Jacky (Mohanlal), which he jointly runs with Shekaran Kutty (Suresh Gopi), the son of the state Chief Minister. Sagar opposes Shekaran's wishes to expand the business into narcotics, & this makes them fall out with each other. IG Thomas (Janardanan), who has a personal vendetta against the Chief Minister, also tries to exploit this situation.

Dr. Aparna (Lakshmi Lahari), whose divorce battle with Dr. Venugopal (Saikumar) is underway & is fighting for her son's custody, is an enigmatic personality. Aparna seduces Anand (Indrajith), her lawyer & the husband of her co-worker Dr. Mallika (Jyothirmayi), & also plays around with Thriprayar Madhavan (Mukesh), Aparna's neighbor & an aspiring musician who is in love with her. Medical Representative Mathew Ninan Koshy (Mukesh), a self-proclaimed playboy enters into a bet with his three roommates, Bank Cashier Pavithran (Siddique), Tutorial College Lecturer Murthy (Manian Pillai Raju) & Ravi (Suresh Gopi) who runs an exporting company called Falcon Exporters, wherein each of them would point out a girl to Mathew, whom he would woo in a month's time. Mathew sets out to fulfill his bet, with hilarious & disastrous results.

Sreenivasan (Jayaram), who lead a care-free life with his friends, hesitantly joins the Police force due to family pressure. He gets posted to the village police station of Vadakkekara, where he meets & gets attracted to Chandrika (Urvashi), daughter of Head Constable Parameshwaran (Oduvil Unnikrishnan). While transporting a murder accused, Peter (Mukesh), to the court, he dupes Sreenivasan & escapes. With his job at stake, Sreenivasan goes in search of Peter to Peter's hometown of Chinnankolli.

A coterie of crooked politicians - Kazhuthumuttam Vasudevan Pillai (Prathapachandran), Erinjoli Abubaker (Mammukoya), Mathai Thomas Pappachan (Kollam Thulasi), Kaimal (Janardanan) & a liquor businessman Vishwam (K.P.A.C. Sunny), frustrated with the upright Chief Minister K.G.R (Sukumaran), hires an assassin nicknamed Gomez (Captain Raju), to kill the Chief Minister. Getting wind of the plot via a tip-off, Crime Branch DSP Perumal (Mammootty) investigates & tries to stop the determined assassin.

When Chandri (Urvashi), Sivan's (Mammootty) sister, gets pregnant outside of marriage & seeing Sivan's anger at this, Chandri names Sivan's best friend, Chellan (Gopi), as the father & hearing this Sivan kills Chellan. Resolute on revenge, Chellan's brother Bhadran (Mohanlal) sells Chandri off to a brothel & awaits Sivan's return from the jail. But after Sivan's return, when Bhadran is stabbed by a couple of his enemies, Sivan comes to Bhadran's rescue, in spite of Bhadran's enemity towards him.

"Aadu" Thoma (Mohanlal), a notorious rowdy in the small town of Injimukku & his father, Chacko (Thilakan), a famed Math teacher who was felicitated by the Indian President, both hate each other & isn't on talking terms, with Thoma's mother Mary (K.P.A.C. Lalitha) & sister Jancy (Chippy), torn between them. Thoma's old childhood friend Thulasi (Urvashi) returns to town, & although Thoma gets initially irritated by her antics, he starts reforming bit by bit. However, Thoma's old foes don't let go.

Velayudhankutty (Jayaram), after a failed try to marry his uncle Shankarankutty Menon's (Innocent) daughter Amminikutty (Sitara), leaves for Palani to find an old pal Kunjikhader (Mammukoya) & to get a job. There, the search for Kunjikhader lands him in jail & he loses all his cash. Desperate, he robs Kaalimuthu (Krishnankutty Nair) & but his loot turns out to be a barber's kit, with which he becomes a barber. Later, he lies to Kaalimuthu about being an orphan & Kaalimuthu adopts him as his son.

Kanchana (Urvashi), frustrated with her housewife life & overcome with an inferiority complex after the arrival of her brother-in-law Mohanan's (Jayaram) working wife Shailaja (Parvathi), misleads her husband Sukumaran (Sreenivasan) to turn against his family. Sukumaran, Kanchana & their daughter starts living apart in a rented house in a posh colony. Soon Kanchana's demands to keep up with their neighbors forces them to start living beyond their means, with dire consequences.

Arundhathi Menon (Urvashi) gets pimped by a family friend Brahmadattan (Jayaram), to procure a job for himself. Arundhathi's father kills himself in humiliation & she ends up at a whorehouse. Later, she meets James (Balachandra Menon) & becomes his girlfriend, but loses him to a weak heart. A pregnant Arundhathi is raped by James's friends George (Lalu Alex) & gang, causing a miscarriage, after which she returns to her hometown. There, she meets Balagopalan (Suresh Gopi), her childhood friend.

Sethumadhavan (Mohanlal), a struggling middle-class man, tries to start a biscuit factory - 'Dakshayani Biscuits', with his hopes constantly thwarted by corrupt government officials demanding bribes to approve his papers. Having a huge joint family to support, he doesn't confide about his troubles to anyone, including his wife Sulochana (Urvashi), who constantly accuses him of not giving her enough attention. Things continue to worsen till Sethumadhavan tells Sulochana that they should separate.

Two friends - Sethumadhavan aka Sethu (Jayaram) & Roy (Mukesh) - after trying out various odd jobs, decide to steal, which lands them in jail. After their release, they part ways & Sethu starts working in a tea estate in Sooryagiri, posing as Albert Alex, with Albert's certificates given to him by their friend Chakkunni (Jagathi). When a criminal dies in an accident with Albert's work address in his pocket, cop Isaac Thomas's attention falls on Sethu. Sethu & Roy tries to find the real Albert.

A con-artist, Gopinathan aka Gopi (Siddique), a pick-pocket Mathunni (Sainuddin), & a law-school dropout Maya Devi (Urvashi), are friends & neighbors & pulls off a couple of con schemes together. Later, Gopi gets selected as a Sub Inspector of Police, after which he turns incorrupt. Misunderstandings drives Gopi & Maya apart, but they still loved each other. When some wealthy jewels & statues get stolen from the govt. museum by some bigwigs, Gopi, Mathunni & Maya team up again to retrieve them.

Vishnu Menon, Regional Manager of Indo-Arab Travels & a martinet, has 7 unrealistic conditions for his future bride including the girl being able to cook various cuisines, be fluent in Hindi, know driving & Carnatic music & be brave. Vishnu's friend & co-worker Krishnankutty (Jagadish) & brother-in-law V.G. Kurup (Jagathi) tricks him into marrying his steno Lathika (Urvashi) after deceiving him into believing that Lathika had all the qualities. After the marriage, they try to keep up the story.

Madhavan Nair (Thilakan), a cabby, & his wife Bharathi (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), have 4 children - Prasad (Manian Pillai Raju), Santhosh (Baiju), Urmila (Renuka) & Geetha (Urvashi). Being forced out of their rented house by their landlord Kikkili (Meena), Madhavan is forced to buy some land & build a house of their own. However, at the time of their need, all their ungrateful children & their spouses, except for Geetha, turn their backs on Madhavan & Bharathi, leaving them to fend for their own.

Injakkadan Mathai (Innocent) & sons Thankachan (Suresh Gopi) & Roy (Jagadish) run a gainful cloth shop while a rival store run by the Chungathara family is at a loss, much to the latter's ire. After Thankachan weds Beena (Saranya), daughter of an old pal of Mathai, Thommichan, Chungathara misleads David (Rajan P. Dev), Beena's uncle, into thinking that Mathai had killed Thommichan. Hearing this, Beena's sister Shirley (Urvashi) moves in with Mathai's family, to take revenge for her dad's murder.

When the hillside village of Sasthapuram is haunted by a man-eating leopard, at Fr. Panangodan's (Thilakan) & local mogul Philopose's (Jagannatha Varma) behest, Varunni (Mammootty), a hunter is summoned. A reprehensible character, Varunni starts to steal & fornicate with local women, soon becoming the bane of the village. However, after a local boy Thomas (Mahesh) die by his hands by mistake, Varunni becomes repentant. After confessing to Fr. Panangodan, he begins supporting Thomas's family.

Sunny (Jayaram) & Kariya (Jagadish) join as debt collectors at Pulikkattil Financiers run by Mathew Pulikkadan (Jagathi), where they meet Alice (Urvashi). Sunny falls for Alice & Kariya falls for Alice's sister Annie (Usha) & to marry them, Sunny & Kariya find grooms for their elder sisters - Thommichan (Sukumaran), a lawyer & Williams (Babu Antony), a karate expert. Together, they try to win back the sisters' ancestral property from their evil neighbor Diwakara Panicker who had kicked them out.

While his wife Sumathi (Urvashi) & son was out of town, happily married bank manager Prakash (Suresh Gopi) gets trapped into a one-night stand with Renuka Nair, a rich widow whom he had recently met at the bank. Immediately after the encounter, a guilt-ridden Prakash wants to put the experience behind him & move on, but Renuka refuses to let go of their relationship. Driven to madness by his rejection, she turns to violently harassing both Prakash & his family.

'Nathu' Narayanan, a small-time thug who does anything for money, takes money from contractor Ayyappan Nair (Oduvil) & gangster Karim (Keerikkadan) to beat up Assistant Engineer Benny (Jayaram). Things get out of hand & Benny dies. Nathu is devastated when he finds that Benny was the husband of Asha (Urvashi), a lady he knew & helped once before. A penitent Nathu helps out Asha & gives up his life of crime, but soon the cops investigating the murder get hold of clues which links Nathu to it.

P. T. Zacharia (Jagathi), a middle-aged financier who runs 'Kuttiparambil Financiers', lives with his wife Moly (Urvashi) & daughter Teena (Sruthi Lakshmi). However, after seeing the lifestyle of his womanizer friend Girijavallaba Menon (Mukesh), who was only 5 years younger than him, Zacharia feels frustrated with his life. Goaded by Girija, Zacharia tries to look young & fall into an affair with a younger woman, Urmila (Jyothirmayi). However, Zacharia soon gets trapped in an extortion racket.

Vishnu Narayanan (Mammootty), a rich womanizer who lives a bachelor lifestyle away from his wife Seethalakshmi (Saritha) & mother (Sukumari), lends a virgin girl Indu (Mathu) from a pimp, Nair (Murali), for a week. During this period, Vishnu's family happens upon Indu, & in a bid to save his skin, he lies about Indu being his illicit daughter. Now, Seethalakshmi & Vishnu's mother can't let go of Indu, & Nair & Thomas Chacko (Thilakan), Nair's client in waiting, is after Vishnu to get Indu back.

Aspiring singer Nandan (Shankar) falls in love with Devi (Urvashi), with the blessings of their respective mothers, but Devi's father rebuffs him, causing them to plan to wed secretly. Nandan's friend, unruly Sunny (Mohanlal), Sunny's trusty sidekick Vinod (Jagathi) & Sunny's girlfriend Thara (Geetha) offer support & guidance, but their plans are foiled when tragedy strikes in the form of Sunny's accidental death. After Sunny's death, Sunny's friends & family tries to cope with Sunny's loss.

Industrialist Mohandas & Sreedevi dies in a car accident, orphaning their 4 kids Meera, Maya (Joemol), Manu (Tarun) & Manju. Seizing the chance, family & friends descend upon their house with various claims, with their eye on Mohandas's vast wealth. Seeing that the control over their home is slipping away, the kids bring in a rover, Parameswaran (Thilakan), to act as their long-lost grandfather & to chase away others. In the process, Parameswaran also takes moral responsibility for the children.

City Police Commissioner B. G. Menon (M.G. Soman) seeks the help of a lifer, Vikraman (Mohanlal), to find the killers of his son, Inspector Jayamohan, Vikraman's lookalike, who was on special duty to fight the rising crime in the city. Vikaraman agrees, hoping to escape & continue his search for Badran (C.I. Paul), who had raped his lover Ammini (Chitra) & the reason he had to go to jail. However, upon learning that he was Menon's illicit son, Vikraman decides to help find his brother's killers.

Josekutty (Murali) who ran a vegetable wholesale business in Palani, brings over his wife Teresa (Urvashi) & kids for the Christmas vacation. There, Teresa starts suspecting an affair between Josekutty & the bubbly girl next door, Kaveri (Sunitha), fueled by Kaveri's step-mother Padmini's (Ragini) gossip, with disastrous results.

Tragedy befalls the vacationing family of US-based Unni (Jayaram) & wife Raji (Urvashi), when their daughter Malooty (Shamili) falls into a deep mining hole while playing & gets trapped in it.

Richard aka Richie (Mohanlal), a rich prodigal playboy, spends his life drinking & chasing women. But things get out of hand when he rapes Ashwathy (Urvashi), & her heartbroken simpleton husband Kumara Varma (Nedumudi Venu) commits suicide. Feeling guilty, Richie decides to turn over a new leaf by marrying Sofia (Lizy), but his past doesn't let go.

Unwed single mother Vanaja (Urvashi) & her daughter Ashwathy (Meera Jasmine) were more of friends than mother & daughter, but when Ashwathy falls in love with struggling ambulance chaser Ijo (Narein), Vanaja opposes it because Ijo was an orphan, didn't have a family & she wanted to marry Ashwathy off into a big family. Infuriated, Ashwathy demands to know why they didn't have a family themselves & who her father was. Vanaja refused to answer & this drives Ashwathy away from her.

Jayan (Mohanlal) veers away from his path of crime after seeing the plight of a poor boy, Unni (Kamal Roy), struggling to support his studies. Jayan befriends the group of college students of which Unni was a part of & tries to relive his lost youth. He also finds his long lost mother-like figure from his childhood, Janakiamma (Sukumari) & her daughter Nirmala (Menaka). However, when Nirmala's marriage life was to be threatened by his old associates, Jayan has to return to his old ways again.

Raghavan Thampi (Thilakan) & wife Subadra (Sukumari) force their eldest son, mridangam artist Prabhakaran (Nedumudi Venu), to marry, with the result that he started fighting with his wife Shailaja (Geetha) all the time. Meanwhile, his younger brother Pradeepan (Jayaram) marries Roshni (Urvashi) after lying about him being an orphan. After Roshni ends up being a tenant in the upper level of his own house, Pradeepan now has to play a cat & mouse game to keep both his identities.

Suresh (Shankar) & his mother (Kaviyoor Ponnamma) moves to Madras in search of Lal (Mohanlal), his foe from college who killed his sister Swapna (Poornima Jayaram), but was let go by the law. There, Suresh meets Saritha (Madhavi) aka 'Madras Girl', a thief, who turns out to be his long-gone uncle's daughter & who was in search of Rajasekharan, the criminal who killed her father. When they learn that Rajasekharan was Lal's father, they unite to seek revenge & to bust Rajasekharan's crime ring.

Dr. Balasubramaniam (Mohanlal), after his wife Rukmini's (Urvashi) death, devotes his life for raising son Raju Vishwam (Anu Anand), disregarding even his best friend Mani Sankar Iyer's (Nedumudi Venu) sister & coworker Sreelakshmi's (Parvathi) feelings towards him. When Raju goes to college, Balasubramaniam rejoices, but his joys are cut short when Raju dies in a hazing incident in college at the hands of his seniors. The law lets the culprits go free, but Balasubramaniam doesn't forgive them.

Journalist G. Krishnamoorthy aka GK (Mammootty) is crippled & jailed by minister Shankar (Devan) & politico Panicker (Jagannatha Varma), after GK tries to expose them for raping his friend Maria Fernandez (Sumalatha). After his release, GK helps four convicts, whom he befriended in jail, escape, uses them to pick off his political enemies & helps himself to first dibs on the news for his paper 'New Delhi Diary'. His sister Uma's (Urvashi) lover & staff newsman Suresh (Suresh Gopi) smells a rat.

Madhavan (Jayaram), a famous playback singer, often gets embarrassed in public by his paan-chewing, illiterate & uncouth wife Chandramathi (Urvashi), but in spite of all that, he loved her & their 4 kids. When Chandramathi befriends Indulekha (Mamtha Mohandas), who was the exact opposite of herself in looks & behavior, & seeing how happy her kids were with Indulekha, Chandramathi gets the idea of moving out of Madhavan's life & getting him married to Indulekha, figuring that's what he deserved.

Tired of his headstrong wife Hridayakumari's (Urvashi) constant torture, Sudhakaran (Jayaram), caves into Antony Disilva (Jagadish), a professional killer's offer to kill her & pays him for it. Hridayakumari, however, turns over a new leaf & also becomes pregnant & now Sudhakaran didn't want her killed but isn't able to locate Antony to rescind the deal. Sudhakaran turns suspicious of everyone who approaches Hridayakumari & starts to attack them, causing for everyone to think he turned crazy.

Gayathri (Urvashi), a Brahmin girl, becomes the talk of the village when she comes to teach Arabic at the local school to support her poor family. Local Muslims & Hindus, who didn't want a Hindu teaching an Islamic language, become offended & try to stop her, but activist & poet Shekaran (Murali) & school owner Hajiyar (V.K. Sriraman) encourage her to stay on. Ousted from the house she stayed in as a lodger, Gayathri seeks refuge with a kind Muslim family, which further enrages her detractors.

Haridas (Mammootty), an ex-teacher, clears IAS & becomes the District Collector of Calicut, but faces trials & tribulations from day one. When Haridas had to kick out his younger brother Sudhakaran (Rahman) for misusing his position as a Collector, Sudhakaran steps into politics to compete with Haridas. In a bid to overtake Haridas, Sudhakaran resorts to dirty games which end up in communal riots in the coastal town of Beypore, which pits him against Haridas, who desperately tries to stop him.

Desperate for cash to marry off his sister Urmila (Sangeetha), music-loving, sports-loving Hariprasad (Jagadish) poses to be the exact opposite of his personality to work at G.G. Chemicals, run by strict Gandhian & Malayalam-lover Menon (Madhu). When Menon catches Hariprasad at a cricket game, Hariprasad invents an unruly identical twin, Giriprasad. A comedy of errors with identical quadruplets, separated at birth, coming together as adults. Quadruplets of a rich family are separated at birth by a jealous uncle. One of them ends up with the real father, and grows up to be a suave millionaire. The other three end up in various places: one becomes a fireman, another a wedding cook, and the last a thug. Singer/storyteller Jayadevan (Suresh Gopi) comes to his birth village of Meledathu, where the families of Thekkumpurathu & Vadakkumpurathu were always at loggerheads with each other, to sing at the temple festival for Vadakkumpurathu. Thekkumpurathu invites over folk dancer Kanaka Prabha (Urvashi) to compete with Jayadevan, & after some initial spats, Kanaka Prabha & Jayadevan warms up to each other & discovers that each of them have a tragic past linked to the village & the temple.

Assistant Commissioner of Police & communist R.D. Nayanar (Suresh Gopi) quits his job & moves to Calcutta to join politics after his bitter struggle to bring Prathapa Varma (Devan) of the Ilayidathu Palace, whom he suspected of the murder of Police Commissioner Maya Pillai (Vani Viswanathan), ended in Varma & his goons brutally assaulting & crippling Nayanar. Years later, Nayanar, nominated as the new Chief Minister of Kerala after the communists win the election, returns to seek his revenge.

The male-hating residents of the Eshwari Madam house - Chinthamani Ammal (K.P.A.C. Lalitha), Ponnamma (Kalpana), Nancy Joseph (Vinaya Prasad), Vasundhara (Rudra) & Bhagyarekha (Urvashi) - get into a fix when a mysterious intruder (Jagathi Sreekumar) they strike down during the night, loses his memory & starts behaving like a 4 year old, calling himself "Ikru". They struggle to keep Ikru away from outsiders while trying to figure out his identity & the real reason he was there.

Samu (Mohanlal), a married man with a mentally unstable wife, Leelamma (Urvashi), becomes emotionally involved with Annie (Ramya Krishna), a girl whom he rescues from an accident.

Jewel (Archana Kavi), a rebellious teenager was always at loggerheads with her over-possessive mother Clara (Urvashi), with her hapless dovish father Joseph (Mukesh) torn in between. Jewel seeks solace in the words & guidance of a stranger on the Internet, Amir. Amir slowly reforms Jewel, with the result that Jewel falls in love with him, but this doesn't bode well with Joseph & Clara, throwing their family into a crisis.

Ram (Kamal Haasan) is a playboy pilot. His marriage to Mythili (Simran) disintegrates after a series of misunderstandings. A freak incident causes Shyamala to be famous, which further leads to her contesting the elections & becoming a minister. Unnikrishnan (Jayaram) comes to Kuttanad as the new Sub Inspector of Police with an ulterior motive - to bring to justice Memana Madhava Panicker (Karamana), the evil landlord who was responsible for his mother Sarada's (Sabitha Anand) death when he was a young boy. Unnikrishnan finds that the people there were still being oppressed by Panicker & his sons Dineshan (Ramu) & Rameshan (Rizabawa) & he joins hands with the local farmers to organize against Panicker.

Sreedevi (Parvathi) & Shiny (Urvashi), who used to be friends in college, meet again as neighbors when Shiny & her husband Roy (Mukesh) move in as tenants into the ground floor of the same house Sreedevi & her husband Rajmohan (Saikumar) lived in. Roy & Rajmohan too become best friends, but soon their collective friendship is ruined when Roy starts to pay heed to rumors from others that Shiny was having an affair with Rajmohan, & Rajmohan starts to suspect the same between Sreedevi & Roy.
