88 60% Five Easy Pieces (1970) - Rated 28 Jan 2017
"Jack Nicholson is great as the pensive runaway who can't figure himself out. Five Easy Pieces is an interesting character study from one of the best periods of time in film."
95 83% There Will Be Blood (2007) - Rated 28 Jan 2017
"This is an excellent, really disturbing portrayal of a man's descent into madness as the United States descends into industrialism (I offer that it is not coincidental on Anderson's part to juxtapose these two things). As always, Daniel Day Lewis is spectacular as Daniel Plainview: a conflicted, complex, and ultimately frightening oil magnate. P.T. Anderson's shots and pacing are both great. Johnny Greenwood provides a memorable score too. One of the best from the 2000s."
98 91% Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) - Rated 28 Jan 2017
"For me, this was the darkest Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back. It also happens to be one of the best Star Wars movies. The lead actors were great, the story was compelling, and there were enough nods to the rest of the series to let you know you were still watching a film that was part of the Star Wars universe. Something the film does well is convey the sense of desperation for the rebels. Rogue One is a wonderful addition to the series: one that gives further meaning to A New Hope."
75 31% Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) - Rated 19 Jan 2017
"Disjointed and too long. Do people think Russell Brand is funny? Jason Segel and Mila Kunis are both charming, which saves this film from being a total loss."
89 64% Blackfish (2013) - Rated 19 Jan 2017
"I didn't see this when it originally came out, but I can tell you that you will never want to go to Sea World again after watching this. If you are wondering why Ringling Brothers is calling it quits, it's because of damning documentaries like this."
90 69% Payback (1999) - Rated 19 Jan 2017
"Mel Gibson is fantastic in this neo-noir action thriller. The lighting is fantastic and the story arc leaves you loving bad guys."
90 69% American History X (1998) - Rated 19 Jan 2017
"A powerful film on ignorance and hatred. Edward Norton turns in a brilliant performance as well -- one that details the cause of and solution to racial hate. Not every performance is strong like Norton's, but this weakness does not overshadow the poignant message of the film: racism develops in the living room before it spreads to the streets. Regrettably, it's hard to imagine a time when this film won't be relevant."
100 96% A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) - Rated 19 Jan 2017
"The soundtrack is one of my favorite albums and the movie itself is so nostalgic. I know it's in the suburbs, but Charlie Brown just screams Manhattan to me. With all of his neuroses and idiosyncrasies, Charlie Brown is like a mini Woody Allen for kids. If you haven't, see this movie. It's timeless."
93 78% Phenomena (1985) - Rated 19 Jan 2017
"Equal parts brilliant and horrible. I love Argento for his overly dramatic dialogue, operatic moods, and beautiful directing. Phenomena might be his most absurd movie. Without giving anything away, here is what I'd say: Phenomena is like a good Hall and Oates song. It's cheesy and you know it, but you can't help liking it. If anything, the cheese only heightens your appreciation. If you like camp and you like horror, you'll like Phenomena. I know I did."
