Bio: Most films are rated according to my current desire to watch them again, with some weight given to their their original impact. Given that I've probably seen thousands of films over a lifetime, some many years ago with big eyes and empty head, some films that I loved at the time, now seem dated, stale or plain silly, and their rating will suffer accordingly, but I will try to point this out in the review. Also films prior to about 1967 are different and lack the dynamic range in almost every area that post 1967 films do, and so their ratings will also suffer. There is just no way to compare them to modern films. Top scores for pre 67 films will probably be around 70, so if you see one this high it means I consider it the best of its era, and well worth a watch if in the mood for more sedate fare.

"In my opinion, the high ratings on this film are excessive, and are based on historical precedence and/or peer pressure. It's just another old foreign film which carries its nobility as a shield against criticism. Who are you to question, when so many before you have Acquiescenced? You're not a heretic are you? There is just no conceivable way this should still be considered one of the greatest movies of all time, when so much has improved in filmmaking in 60 years."
