65 27% The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) - Dec 09, 2019
"An oddity amongst the Craven I've seen, probably because he didn't pen the script. It very much feels like a typical goofy archeological adventure flick in the vein of the Brendan Fraser Mummy, or National Treasure that somehow found its way into Craven's hands. It has some brilliant dreamy FX sequences, but the 'exoticism' of Haiti is uncomfortablely overplayed, the voice over is awful, and Pullman has about as much charisma as a shovel. Fiedel totally plagerizes his own T2 score."
95 86% McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) - Dec 08, 2019
"Snowy drama that's heavier on the atmosphere than the action, and is almost as divorced from the 'revisionist Western' as it is from the original Westerns. Definitely a singular take on the genre, but with all the snow and nihilism it feels a little bit like watching Corbucci's 'The Great Silence' through a haze of opium smoke. "
65 27% Frozen II (2019) - Nov 29, 2019
"The plot is an expository dumpster fire even before considering how obnoxiously hard Disney trys to be woke these days. The music is basically the same as the last one. The animation, however, is spectacular. Probably the greatest example I've seen of (fully) 3D animation in a (mainstream) feature film, and one that finally shows hints of breaking free of the fetishistic pursuit of photorealism that 3D has been locked into."
80 53% Spy Kids (2001) - Nov 21, 2019
"A rare breed indeed, an actual legitimately good live action children's movie."
90 76% Diary of a Lost Girl (1929) - Nov 16, 2019
"Lesser of the pair of Pabst/Brooks collaborations, but still great."
30 5% Hatchet (2007) - Nov 11, 2019
"Cringe. Gore FX are above average for 2007 but the characters all fit into the mega-obnoxious confrontational ensemble cast thing that horror was doing all through the 90s and early 00s. The Louisiana swamp setting has no personality at all beyond dark horror forest #7835. There's no tension, no atmosphere, and really nothing memorable at all. The trope awareness and bad horror movie that knows it's bad schtick is terrible far more often than its even slightly good, and Hatchet is no exception."
90 76% Withnail & I (1987) - Nov 10, 2019
60 20% Overlord (2018) - Nov 10, 2019
" tldr; plays it too safe to be an exploitation movie, and falls flat when it's not violent"
35 7% CHIPS (2017) - Nov 09, 2019
"This was on TV and it wasn't bad enough that I turned it off so that's something I guess. It's so visually bland that after several commercial breaks it took me like 30 seconds to realize that the movie was back on and it wasn't another commercial."
100 95% The Lighthouse (2019) - Nov 03, 2019
"1.19:1 is the future"
