40 6% The Ward (2011) - Rated 19 Aug 2011
"John Carpenter's long run of knocking out turkeys continues with The Ward. Sad to say the once great man simply doesn't seem to care anymore and is doing everything by the numbers. I counted one half scare in the 90 minute running time, which for a horror film lacking any atmosphere at all is unforgivable. Any plus points to be found here? Well the girls are kind of nice looking and that's about it. Sadly. Go watch Halloween or The Thing to see how good Carpenter can be, this sadly isn't."
90 52% Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) - Rated 18 Aug 2011
"Having no interest in this originally was swayed by the positive reviews and word of mouth it was generating. Really quite good stuff for a throwaway summer blockbuster. The acting at times is of the Ikea variety but the CG simians more than make up for it. The lead ape Caesar manages a more emotive and nuanced performance than James Franco, pretty good considering it was created inside a computer and with the help of rent a chimp Andy Serkis. Enjoyable enough fluff to pass a couple of hours"
90 52% Rango (2011) - Rated 16 Aug 2011
"Brilliant animated Western that will probably bore younger kids rigid, but I had a blast with it. Funny in the right places, full of references for buffs to spot and the animation and styling is fabulous. The blu ray is real reference quality stuff. Recommended"
100 84% I Saw the Devil (2010) - Rated 12 Aug 2011
"Cracking Korean horror flick from Jee woon Kim. Not an easy watch by any stretch of the imagination, it's brutal in places and drags a little toward the end but its a beautiful film to look at and is directed with a huge amount of style. Catch it before the inevitable remake which I'm predicting will star Mark Wahlberg and Jeffrey Dean Morgan"
90 52% Army of Darkness (1993) - Rated 27 Jul 2011
"The final part of the Evil Dead trilogy, until the remake/reboot slides it's way out of the Hollywood shit machine in 2013. Always had a blast with this and nothing has changed since my 11 year old brain fell in love with it. As mad as a sock full of Mexican Staring Frogs, but a whole heap of fun. Some of the composite shots are horrendous, but that's easily forgiven by the use of stop motion and some cracking one liners. Seek out the extended version if possible with the S-Mart ending."
100 84% The Evil Dead (1981) - Rated 27 Jul 2011
"This amazes me more each time I watch it. The camera work is mind boggling for something that cost less than the catering budget on Transformers. Bruce Campbell is great as Ashley J Williams (no relation, wish he was) For a low budget flick, the pacing is just right, a lot of them can be bogged down when there isn't money to spend actually creating spectacle, but not here. Extra points knowing that Sam Raimi would go on from tree rape in this to breaking box office records with Spiderman. Bravo!"
90 52% Nighthawks (1981) - Rated 26 Jul 2011
"One of the more forgotten Stallone movies, Nighthawks is a bit of a hidden gem. Stallone is great as Deke Da Silva, who seems to have copied his look from Dave Lee Travis. Rutger Hauer is terrific as Wulgar and there is a great score from Prog meister Keith Emerson. Was weird finding out that director Bruce Malmouth played the ring announcer in The Karate Kid."
100 84% Demolition Man (1993) - Rated 26 Jul 2011
"1993 was a hot year for action flick, with this, Cliffhanger and Last Action Hero all being released in that glorious 12 month period. Demotion Man is fun with a capital fuck. Snipes was never better than blonde bonced Simon Phoenix, such a shame he's got himself banged up for not paying his taxes or he might of found himself as one of The Expendables. Quotable script and some solid action sequences make for a 90 minute blast of testosterone. Nigel Hawthorne as a baddie is an odd choice however"
80 28% Super (2011) - Rated 25 Jul 2011
"Offbeat take on the Superhero genre by James Gunn who wrote Tromeo and Juliet for Troma. Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page are great as the wannabe heroes of the tale. Great support from Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker and Gregg Henry. Recommended for those who like the discover films away from the mainstream."
70 20% Beverly Hills Cop (1984) - Rated 25 Jul 2011
"Always had fond memories of this but it really hasn't aged well. 48 Hours is a much better example of a good Eddie Murphy flick. Stephen Berkoff as the villain is about as menacing as a wet sock"
