40 0% House on Haunted Hill (1959) - Rated 11 May 2013
"Originally saw this at a very young age. After years of thinking it to be a classic I have found I was mistaken upon re-watching it. Not even Vincent Price can save this. All the elements for a campy good time are there, but nothing really makes sense or has any rhyme or reason to it. The "twist ending" is an eye roller. All around a real snoozefest. A '40' I say!"
70 33% The Gorgon (1964) - Rated 10 Feb 2013
"Gets points for originality (using a monster from Greek Mythology in a Gothic setting instead of rehashing a popular, pre-established creature). Also gets points for acting, but It's a Hammer film from the 60s ( all the acting was pretty much great in these). Cushing sports a killer 'stache as does Lee. I suppose matching mustaches were in their contracts for this one. The film is a bit repetitive but occasionally effective. Equal parts classy/great and boring/cheesy. A '70' I say!"
80 66% The Man in the White Suit (1951) - Rated 07 Feb 2013
"Let it be known...I love Alec Guinness. His role in this movie is subtly brilliant. The social commentary is so on the money, the acting so solid, the direction so perfect, and the gags so funny that it's a near perfect movie. It's not entirely perfect of course. Its plot drags a bit during its second half (A lot of stuffed suits running around like stooges). Guinness' character, his invention, and the cynical humor are the main highlights. A '80' I say!"
60 16% Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966) - Rated 03 Feb 2013
"This Hammer Dracula entry is akin to having a master painter paint a picture of a piece of lint. Director Terence Fisher, who previously did wonders with 'Curse of Frankenstein' and 'Horror of Dracula' once again shoots a beautiful film here but the story is snoresville. An uninteresting family stars in a conventional "Guy warns them not to go to a creepy castle so they go to said creepy castle anyway" story. No Peter Cushing?!? Christopher Lee not having a word of dialogue?!? A '60' I say!"
80 66% The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) - Rated 01 Feb 2013
"Strays from the source material but in very entertaining ways! The Baron is more violent than the creature! Peter Cushing (surprise surprise) is amazing as Victor. Lee fills the part of the lumbering, sewn together, snazzy jacket wearing monster well enough but it's not a role that particularly showcases all his skills. Great sets/costumes/supporting cast as well. A fine version of the Frankenstein tale, though not enough emphasis on doctor/creation relationship/parallels. An '80' I say!"
70 33% Horror Express (1972) - Rated 31 Jan 2013
"Part 'Murder on the Orient Express', part 'The Thing', part Missing Link/Bigfoot movie, part alien movie, part zombie movie. Starring absolute legends Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in dazzling form (with Lee cast as the protagonist instead of a brooding monster like usual), which is the only real reason to see this. Telly Savalas appears for about two scenes near the end and pretty much chews the scenery big time. Why is he here? Weirdly small part. Kooky fun. Eyeballs galore! A '70' I say!"
