70 52% Mr. Long (2017) - Rated 19 Aug 2018
"I totally fell for the cute kid. The rest of the movie seemed a little too predictable (even though I couldn't help but laugh at the happy ending). The fight scenes were well choreographed, and I liked the raw way the whole film was shot. What bothered me most though, was the lenghty cutback to the mother's life. All in all, a nice way to spend an evening, but not the best movie out there."
75 69% Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot (2018) - Rated 19 Aug 2018
"As always Phoenix performs perfectly, making the movie feel very authentic. He does sell the struggle with alcoholism, but seems surprisingly little bothered by his handicap. The retro setting translated well for me. However, I felt that some scenes were too repetitive ("I know three things about my mother..."), and as I didn't know Callahan before this bio pic, I may have lacked a certain passion to begin with."
63 29% The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) - Rated 25 Feb 2018
"It reminded me very much of other suspense in space movies like "Life", although I'm happy that it wasn't as graphic and unhappy about similar sloppiness regarding physics in space. It's not really original, but the cast make it fun enough, yet the feeling that I've already watched very similar movies remained."
79 84% Tsumiki no ie (2008) - Rated 22 Feb 2018
"A wonderfully animated short that finds a fitting metaphor for isolation and loneliness. It gets a little too sentimental maybe, but it's still sweet."
73 62% The Other Side of Hope (2017) - Rated 22 Feb 2018
"A great Kaurismäki experience with a refreshing perspective on the refugee topic."
60 22% The Good Dinosaur (2015) - Rated 22 Feb 2018
"Nicely animated, but feels like the weird love child of "Ice Age" and "The Land Before Time"."
76 74% The Square (2017) - Rated 22 Feb 2018
"A film that holds up the mirror to its presumably well-educated audience: The irony of exhibiting an artistic safe space while ignoring people in need on a daily base is delicious. Östlund makes his audience feel self-conscious and uncomfortable on an ethical, but also physical level. A challenging movie for all artsy people out there."
90 99% Arrival (2016) - Rated 22 Feb 2018
"I loved everything about this movie: Squid-like but non-evil aliens, humanities winning over science and military force, a strong female academic lead, and a proper play with time that doesn't feel illogical. It looks good too. All in all a great movie."
74 64% Prisoners (2013) - Rated 22 Feb 2018
"If you're not sober while watching this, you might develop paranoia. And a major disgust for people and the inherent cruelty of mankind. Just saying."
80 89% The Skin I Live In (2011) - Rated 22 Feb 2018
"This movie is so unsettling in a slow and quiet way. It keeps getting creepier and leaves the viewer puzzled until the point where it made me feel sick and disgusted by human nature. Impressive script and direction, maybe even better acting."
