73 37% Knives Out (2019) - Oct 21, 2020
"Average movie at the end - the mystery/reveal was very whelming and the characters were not that interesting. I liked Ready or Not as a more entertaining play on this style."
42 9% Airplane! (1980) - Sep 27, 2020
"Hasn't aged well in a number of ways, some of the humor may be pretty off-putting now but beyond that, pacing is slow, not much of a story, characters are full slapstick."
68 27% Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) - Aug 16, 2020
"Well-acted and exquisite sets/cinematography, but full of exposition in its labyrinth plot, which is not an asset here. There really isn't much substance or mystery in watching things unfold, we just get recaps and characters telling us what happens. There is also no real drama along the way."
91 95% O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) - Jul 08, 2020
"A beautiful, complete story, terrific musical soundtrack and setting. This may be peak Coen brothers?"
72 35% Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019) - Jun 27, 2020
"Hard to rate this movie outside of the context of the sequel trilogy - it falls short in a LOT of areas, but my inner Star Wars fandom feels like this is still the "right" movie compared to how Episode XIII ruined the universe. The story ambition is there, especially between Rey and Kylo, but it feels like a rushed version of what 8+9 should've been, and there's no interesting plot for Finn or Poe. Adam Driver's acting really carries the movie and I wish we could have focused on him all along."
79 51% John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) - Jun 16, 2020
"I liked it much better than the first - I think the choreography got better/less generic, and am starting to appreciate the over-the-top style a bit more, and it starts to build up a little more of a universe."
85 77% Ad Astra (2019) - Jun 16, 2020
"Gripping and suspenseful - the film executes flawlessly on some heart-pounding action scenes like no other. There's a lot of introspection and voiceover but the film does well at touching on some sci-fi themes of exploration and being alone, with some hints of Contact and Interstellar. The last act of the movie falls a little flat, none of the characters aside from Brad Pitt are handled well, Tommy Lee Jones' character could cut much deeper if his reveal was saved for the end."
87 86% Requiem for a Dream (2000) - Jun 07, 2020
"Brutal, disturbing movie. The plot structure is not as traditional but all the characters and their descent really grip you."
62 21% Wonder Woman (2017) - Jun 06, 2020
"It started with potential (as superhero movies go), but an awful final act with a terrible/non-sensical villain. The world of the Amazons and the WWI setting had potential at the start, but the rest of the movie isn't worth watching and there's a lot of faux-grandeur that just doesn't work. Acting/chemistry is a bit wooden, at least with most Marvel movies there are a few entertaining quips/side characters."
72 35% Kingdom of Heaven (2005) - May 26, 2020
"(Director's Cut): insanely grand in ambition yet very flawed. It has some pieces of a great epic - insane battle set pieces on the scale of LotR, fantastic acting by some leads (Norton, Irons, Massoud), and high-stakes political plot like Game of Thrones. Yet the pacing is all off (imagine shoving all of S1 GoT into a 3h movie), Bloom and Green are really bland. "
