70 35% Y Tu Mamá También (2001) - Rated 28 May 2014
"Fantastic acting and great theme on sexual exploration. Very interesting ideas but not enough to capture my attention or make me care"
83 68% The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - Rated 28 May 2014
"Up there with American Psycho as far as dark comedy in New York City goes."
75 50% Vivre Sa Vie (1962) - Rated 22 Nov 2013
"Not my favourite from Godard, or maybe it's because I've watched enough from him to start seeing him repeat most of his ideas and cinematographic style over and over again in his films and it can get boring. However, the film did get much better in the second half, especially with scenes of Nana's prostitution and the coffee shop debate. Anna Karina is great so there you have it."
85 74% La Haine (1995) - Rated 22 Nov 2013
"Very well shot and doesn't let up at all in its rawness and intensity. Some scenes were a little ridiculous but overall, the anger and angst filling every dialogue and every scene was more than enough to move the story forward and keep me engaged. Though it captures an important part of French history and the limitations of brotherhood, I think I would be able to connect with it more if I actually understood France societal context more."
72 43% A Serious Man (2009) - Rated 07 Sep 2013
"I really loved the dreamy cinematography here, and just the general mood of the film in capturing the sometimes overwhelmingly surreal and absurd nature of reality and a man's struggle against it to keep afloat. That ending has got to be the darkest of dark comedy endings - and like someone pointed out, a big "fuck you" to the audience, that actually makes a big joke out of everything the film has built up to.It was a fresh and funny ending but I wonder about the potential it could otherwise have."
73 46% Stranger Than Paradise (1984) - Rated 31 Aug 2013
"The first film whereby I find myself completely sitting on the fence. It's a strangely peaceful yet jarring piece of cinema - boring, dull, but increasingly engaging and actually flows surprisingly well. The deadpan comedy doesn't really work for me here but the mood it seeks to create through its photography is great. It's like a low budget Lost In Translation."
70 35% Please Vote for Me (2007) - Rated 25 Aug 2013
"I never really liked "documentary films", but this is surprisingly memorable and good. Despite it's brevity, it provides a peek into the growing schooling system in China and the people's relationship with it."
89 84% Su-ki-da (2005) - Rated 27 Jul 2013
"I absolutely loved the cinematography and quiet atmosphere in here. The sparse and deliberate dialogue works for me, and not a single dialogue is wasted, constantly moving things forward but still retaining the same "stillness". The acting is brilliant and you could tell it isn't simple to transmit all the subtle cues at the right timing. Horrible guitar playing has also never been so beautiful."
50 12% Dazed and Confused (1993) - Rated 14 Jul 2013
"I guess you'll have to live through a certain time period and location to be able to relate to this film. Timeless teenage schooling characters that one can relate to regardless of location can happen, but it didn't happen for me here. Nothing stands out for me here, man."
88 80% American Psycho (2000) - Rated 13 Jun 2013
"It's actually really enjoyable and fun to watch, even if the main source of it is Christian Bale himself, who puts up a hilarious and absurd performance that I thoroughly enjoyed. Yes, the script does lack subtlety with very self-obsessed dislikable characters but it was hella quotable. Some scenes are absurd -how can you get away with a shooting like that?- but I'm willing to overlook it with Bale's performance and the claustrophobic and miserable portrayal of NYC."
