80 63% Cowboys & Aliens (2011) - Rated 30 Jul 2011
"The film lives up to the almost year of hype behind it. A superb movie on all fronts, as a scifi and as a well done western, Cowboys & Aliens doesn't fail to impress. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford are wonderful to watch act on screen in any film and this is no exception. The only criticisms one can place here is that at times, things feel a little drawn out and some of the supporting characters are weak (see Olivia Wilde's acting) but this is a great film and an enjoyable time at the theatre."
85 77% Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - Rated 30 Jul 2011
"Probably the best of the Avengers Quadrilogy, Captain America is a near flawless action film that's only shortcomings are that it feels little long at times but part of what makes the film great is the epic proportions it creates. A battle spanning the entirety of WW2, you really get a feel of Rogers struggles as he tries to prove himself a worthy asset of the US military and his continuing battle with the Red Skull played wonderfully by Hugo Weaving. overall this isnt something you should miss."
70 50% 3 Extremes (2004) - Rated 23 Jul 2011
"Three disturbing short films, each by wonderful directors in their own right. While none of the films have anything to do with the other, they share a common theme of extreme disturbing imagery. Fruit Chan's film Dumplings being the best and arguably the most disturbing, Chan Wook's film Cut showing us a dark side of ourselves we've all experienced and Miike's film Box is the oddest and the only one here that I really didn't enjoy. All in all a good film with one setback but still worth a look."
50 30% True Grit (2010) - Rated 23 Jul 2011
"Drawn out, yet somehow rushed feeling, the Coen Brothers take on True Grit is ambitious but not much else. The acting is good, with special mention going to Halie Steinfeld and obviously Jeff Bridges but the script is weak with only a few moments feeling worth while. The ending feels rushed and sudden. Like they just realised they had about 10 minutes of film left and went with it, while the rest of the film feels drawn out and prolonged with dialogue that doesn't matter. Overall disappointing."
85 77% Zodiac (2007) - Rated 22 Jul 2011
"Intense, disturbing, haunting and surprisingly underrated, Zodiac tells the disturbing story of the Californian serial killer and the obsessive people who followed the case long after the murders ceased. It presents these characters in such a light that it shows the villain here isn't the Zodiac, but really their own obsession that slowly breaks the relationships around them. What works best is the sense of helplessness these characters go through and how that draws the viewer in so well."
95 92% Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) - Rated 22 Jul 2011
"The best way to describe this film is calling it a slow burn. The drama builds, the tension rises in one of the most intense games of cat and mouse ever depicted in film plays out. A cruel and twisted tale of vengeance and the consequences of taking such actions. The ending is what sealed this for me. The brilliance of the film is that all characters have motive for the acts they commit, leaving zero absolutes. No good, no evil. Just a cause and effect situation and it's told brilliantly."
70 50% X-Men: First Class (2011) - Rated 22 Jul 2011
"One thing this film has going for it is the acting by its lead characters. Fassbender, McAvoy and surprisingly, Bacon all deliver wonderful performances here that all but make the movie. However, other than that, not much else is going for it. It's watered down by painfully bad secondary characters, not just the actors, but the mutants are boring. A decent story with a couple good action scenes with fantastic acting from 3 of the cast members don't save the film from being simply "decent""
95 92% Le Samouraï (1967) - Rated 22 Jul 2011
"Elegant, skillful, cunning, menacing, but most importantly, calm. Alain Delon's performance as Jef Costello is as brilliant as it is awe inspiring. The film is presented with such style and beauty that it's impossible to stop watching. He's called The Samurai for a reason. Costello takes after the ancient Japanese warrior mentality wonderfully and keeps a chilling sense of calm and collected zen even in the face of danger. Easily one of the best examples of near perfect film making."
45 25% Paprika (2006) - Rated 22 Jul 2011
"Beautiful animation, quirky comedy and some interesting characters don't save this film from being a disappointing effort, and sadly last, from Satoshi Kon. While the anime itself is stunning to look at, the story is nigh incomprehensible and by the end, I felt like I had just taken a bad acid trip that left me delirious and disorientated. The humour is funny when it can get through and it presents a few interesting themes of dream invasion and such but it becomes nothing more than mediocrity."
75 56% The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) - Rated 18 Jul 2011
"Holds up well today but some will immediately be put off by the dated setting and plot. Even still, if you can get passed the effects time has had on this movie, it is an enjoyable science fiction experience and considering the impact this film had when it first came out, this definitely deserves recognition. Though the constant symbolism can get annoying, it isn't bad enough to ruin the movie and it is a must watch for any and all scifi fans."
