70 38% Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993) - Rated 04 Feb 2010
"An instanst children's classic! I don't know why talking animals has so much appeal to people but Homeward Bound and Babe prove that it works. Having a great cast of voices doesn't hurt either. Ameche, Field, and Fox are all perfect matches for the animals they voice. All things aside, who doesn't get sad when Shadow is stuck in the hole?"
70 38% Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - Rated 04 Feb 2010
"In a time of LOTR and a reborn Star Wars franchise it is easy to see why Disney wanted an epic trilogy to call there own. The problem is that Black Pearl is the best of the set. A pirate movie in the classic sense. Ghosts, cursed treasure, looting, and sword play make for an exciting adventure story. Depp steals the show as charming yet devious pirate Jack Sparrow. The problem is they made two more. Both sequels feel bloated and over produced. Lets hope they get back to the basics for number 4"
95 98% Psycho (1960) - Rated 27 Jan 2010
"The all time #1 thriller, and a near perfect movie. If there is one thing Hitchcock mastered it's keeping you on the edge of your seat. The acting is great, the shots and score are beautiful, and the story is twisted. Hitchcock's masterful use of the "McGuffin" is so clear in Psycho. He cleverly hints at that envolope of money from time to time. Or at least until the famous shower scene. I love the "no late admission" rule. We need someone to bring that respect back to the cinema."
80 81% Boogie Nights (1997) - Rated 27 Jan 2010
"This is still my favourite PTA film. A gritty and realistic feeling look at the 70s porn industry. Heavily based on the life of adult icon John Holmes. Everyone in the cast is outstanding, and it's probably the srtongest performance of Reynold's career. I have a soft spot for movies that take place in the 70s, and Boogie Nights pulls it off so well. The soundtrack is great on it's own. Wahlberg was the perfect Dirk Diggler. His characters rise to fame and downfall keep us loving and pitying him."
70 38% Dead Alive (1992) - Rated 27 Jan 2010
"My favourite thing about this movie is that it's a Peter Jackson film. Being as most people would have seen LOTR first, this movie leaves you wondering how this guy made LOTR at all. But I love that Jackson got his start in schlocky genre films. His early work is hugely entertaining and leaves me with warm thoughts of a younger Jackson at the drive-in watching Howling 3. Not to mention the fact that this movie contains what must be the bloodiest scene ever put into a zombie movie. enough said!"
40 1% Million Dollar Baby (2004) - Rated 27 Jan 2010
"Morgan Freeman is the saving grace of this movie. Not that I think the other characters were bad. I think the direction is where the movie falls short. I knw I'll get bashed for saying that. But Eastwood milks the end way too long for my liking. When Swank's character can't get any lower he twists the knife and takes it even further."
90 95% The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) - Rated 27 Jan 2010
"Peter Jackson brought the impossible movie to life with so much care and respect. Two Towers is everything the midle portion of a trilogy should be, both dark and desperate, but still hopeful. The timeline is perfectly paced across three plot lines. Ground breaking effects and a beautiful score round out the experience. Gollum has to be the best CG character to date. He looks so believable. Elijah Wood gets a lot of greif for his portrayal of Frodo, but I think he does well with a hard role."
69 15% Rocky IV (1985) - Rated 27 Jan 2010
"I know that by this point the Rocky franchise was already getting weak, but I love Rocky 4. How can you not like Dolph Lundgren. Not only is he a cold hearted fighting machine, but he is also huge. Rocky is not only fighting a personal fight for revenge, but he is also fighting for the pride of his country. I think it's a vital part of the Rocky collection."
70 38% Old School (2003) - Rated 27 Jan 2010
"I'm always a fan of Luke Wilson. In a drama or a comedy I find he does a good job. This movie is funny. Wilson, Vaughn and Ferrell are all great together. Ferrell provides the zany comedy, Vaughn sticks to his roots with the dialogue driven humour, and Wilson plays the helpless friend that bounces between the two. This movie falls into the category of movies where Will Ferrell steels the show. Long before his over the top antics began to feel tired. Lets hope the upcoming sequel isn't a bust."
70 38% Burn After Reading (2008) - Rated 26 Jan 2010
"One thing that is great about the Coen brothers is how they pace their career. This movie followed No Country For Old Men which silled at the awards shows. Then they release this film which is so funny and quirky. It serves as sort of a palette cleanser which allows them to continue with the type of films that they ae famous for. As with all heir movies the cast is excellent. Simmon and Rasche steal the show and set the stage for a movie full of people who don't know what's going on."
