65 12% The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"Not very good. I didn't like the books to begin with and the movie was even worse. It tried to be an epic, in the vein of LOTR or Harry Potter, but it just failed. The characters are watered down; the loss of Aslan packs no emotional punch, nor is Tilda Swinton's character given enough time to fully develop into someone truly menacing. It's a shame, because she's such a skilled actress that had she been given the right role, she might have made this flat movie at least a bit engaging."
90 64% 28 Days Later (2002) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"This is the movie that got me hooked on the horror genre, though it's closer to a thriller to be honest. I love apocalyptic tales and I loved how it seemed fairly plausible in concept. The threat of viral epidemics is relevant in today's society. Danny Boyle plays on this fear so well, making the infected really, really scary while not being superhuman. The survivor's roles are well acted; you can practically see the tension wracking their bodies. The strong violence actually seems quite subtle."
95 82% The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"Though it's a bridge between the first and final installments, it more than stands on its own in the LOTR series. I'm convinced that the Battle of Helms Deep is one of the finest battle sequences ever filmed. I like how Aragorn and Sam's characters become more central in this movie. I'm pissed off that Viggo Mortensen and Sam Astin didn't get Oscar nominations, as they would have been deserved."
100 96% Psycho (1960) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"One of the few "perfect" films ever made, in my opinion. The ending twist is so, so good and so surprising, even today (it must have given viewers a heart attack at it's initial release!) Perkins is so sweet and sympathetic in his role, and Janet Leigh makes the most out of a short but extremely memorable role. Hitchcock made many fine films, but this is my favorite and by far his best."
95 82% Apocalypse Now (1979) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"I don't really like war movies, except for ones about the Vietnam War, for some reason. This is a searing and unforgettable movie. I can't really say much more than that. Coppola is a good director and Brando's performance is memorable. Just, see this. It's amazing."
70 17% Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"It's too long and not particularly well acted (though Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush are very entertaining). Still, I won't deny, I really liked it. It's a great, fun escape, perfect for the summer. The special effects are impressive and make the often overwhelming battle scenes something fun to look at, if not particularly subtle."
90 64% King Kong (2005) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"Peter Jackson knows how to make epic films with actual character development. The relationship between Ann and the beast is surprisingly tender. It helps that Naomi Watts is a radiantly beautiful and skilled actress. Even Jack Black, doofus extraordinaire, is good in this. The effects, of course, are jaw-dropping (forming a relationship with WETA digital is the best decision PJ could have ever made). Though it's long, it's not boring at all and well paced. The ending is known, but still sad."
80 41% Land of the Dead (2005) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"Not Romero's best, however it's still a more than adequate zombie flick. As ever, it contains Romero's social commentary, paired with great violent horror movie scenes. I was amused to see Asia Argento, given her relation to Dario Argento, who makes the same type of films as Romero. Compared to the horror movies of today, it's practically a masterpiece. Still, it's a good, but not great addition to the "Dead" series."
85 51% The Constant Gardener (2005) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"This was somewhat flawed but still very compelling. Rachel Weisz received a well-deserved Oscar, and I was surprised Ralph Fiennes got no recognition for his acting in this movie. The central dynamic between their two characters was interesting (were they really that in love? Or was their marriage one of convenience?) and open to interpretation. That really interested me while watching. I think the novel was much better. Still, this movie was quite good."
95 82% A Clockwork Orange (1971) - Rated 28 Dec 2007
"Intriguing, intense and masterfully directed. I've always liked everything Kubrick has directed and this is no exception."
