85 34% Shaun of the Dead (2004) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"With gross-out zombie movies invading the box office around 2004, this movie was a most welcome break from all of the gloom and doom. I normally don't rank comedies too high, but this is a perfect mix of comedy and what you'd expect from a zombie film."
100 93% Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"This is a fantastic twist on the love-story genre. What if you could completely erase a loved one from your mind and be able to start over with no memory of them...would true love still bring you together? This film starts out deep and get deeper. If you don't like movies that make you think, then this isn't for you. To accompany it's fantastic cast (Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Jim Carrey...) is the fantastic writing/directing duo of Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman."
90 59% District 9 (2009) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"This movie is definitely worthy of Peter Jackson's legacy. It has a great and creative storyline that takes sci-fi movies to a new level. This combines all the elements of the science fiction realm (ray guns, aliens, space ships, etc) and puts them in real world settings with real world situations. It's a fantastic look at human suffering and hate with an extra-terrestrial twist."
90 59% The Prestige (2006) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"This movie came out in the midst of Nolan's Batman movie series. And while those movies of his may push this one into the lime light, it is none-the-less equally as great. It's a story with a fantastic depth and a Hitchcock-like intrigue that keeps you riveted to you seats. And even though I was able to guess how it was going to end, it didn't lighten the shock of the twist...much like the act of a true magician."
85 34% Napoleon Dynamite (2004) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"This movie is definitely only for those keen on situational comedy. There's no action, no cursing, not really any plot...but from a situational comedy perspective it remains highly entertaining. It's just a day in the life of small town characters where the simple things we take for granted are amplified to the point that we laugh at them."
90 59% Live Free or Die Hard (2007) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"Like the title of the movie, this movie series is also one that doesn't die easy. While I was a slight fan of the first Die Hard films, this one far surpasses them. It's like the Daniel Craig version of Bond compared to older Bond's or the Chrisopher Nolan version of Batman compared to older ones. This movie has a great plot, tons of action and amazing visual effects. Though a majority of the time the situations are far fetched, you get so sucked in by the action that you don't notice it."
85 34% Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"It's no secret that I am a huge Tim Burton fan. And all the reasons why he is a fantastic director are all evident in this film. He is known for making wonderful movies out of seeminly dark subject matter, so Sweeney Todd is a perfect story for him to adapt to he big screen. As with most of his films, he takes what society normally rejects and gives it a depth that we often ignore, he makes it more real. If you loved the Broadway version, then Burton's version will blow you away."
80 18% From Hell (2001) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"Overshadowed by Alan Moore's more big budget movie adaptations (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), this movie tends to take a back seat. But it is a fantastic adaptation of the Jack the Ripper story gives us the look, feel and tone that puts us back to Whitechapel around the turn of the century. If you like Jack the Ripper stories, this one gives you a possible explanation that will leave you thinking long after the movie has ended."
90 59% Moulin Rouge! (2001) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"I'm a huge fan of Baz Luhrmann's unique method of storytelling, and I consider this one of his best works. I find his method of contemporizing stories (such as Romeo Juliet) and melding them to the visual and musical style of the time very intriguing. Everything in this film has it's meaning, right down to the color hues and song placements. For it's time, it was a movie that was known for it's visual appeal and eye candy, but this far from overshadows it's emotional content and storyline."
97 84% Dean Spanley (2008) - Rated 18 Aug 2009
"This is a fantastic period piece that takes the "shaggy dog" storyline concept and turns it on its head. The acting is superb and the story is very engaging. It's film is such a fascinating story to watch that you fail to notice the lack of sex, action or swearing."
