92 64% Ace in the Hole (1951) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"This Billy Wilder film for some reason not as well known as it should be. This half Film Noir, half MOrality Play has theeth hard and sharper than the American satires made since. A very big influence for P.T. Anderson's There Will Be Blood. The cinematography by future "Naked City" cameraman should not be missed, nor Douglas's rousing, over the top performance, on of his career best."
97 89% The Shop Around the Corner (1940) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"A flawless motion picture. One of the most influential and feel-good comedies ever made. This is simply what people strive for when they set out to make a motion picture. A model to this day."
93 75% Love Me Tonight (1932) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"Lubitsch supervised the production of Love Me tonight, with all of his calling cards, but one gets the feeling that it would feel so madcap if Mamoulian hadn't directed this, the funniest of all musicals. Amazing, pre-code wonderland of set-ups and pay-offs. Not to be missed."
99 96% My Neighbor Totoro (1988) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"Simply one of the best crafted movies ever made. A probing, emotionally charged fantasy."
89 46% The Departed (2006) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"Powerhouse gangster film. The editing, screenplay, and acting ensemble make this a unique picture. Scorsese's first foray outside of New York for a gangster tale, its a real pleasure that combines old Welle's and Huston productions as much as pushes Scorsese's reputation further as the master of contemporary crime."
91 53% Spirited Away (2001) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"Probably the most viewed and well-liked of all the Miyazaki films released in theaters in the US, Spirited Away is a brilliant Alice in Wonderland type tail, equal parts female coming of age and magical realism. A different can of worms than Miyazaki's more adventurous, ruritanian films, this is very accessible work of creative storytelling genius."
69 25% Wedding Crashers (2005) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"Surprisingly good formula writing from Hollywood, the wedding crashers is very funny and not as depraved as it would like you to think. Hilarious performances by Vaughn and Will Farrell, even on repeat viewings. Best of the so-called Frat-Pack films, before Judd Apatow took over the genre."
86 39% Toy Story 2 (1999) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"The Godfather Part II of computer animated sequels, this is a mind blowing continuation of the Toy Story saga, all about selling out. The first great Pixar film."
11 3% Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"A terrible film. The special effects are lost on this rubbish story with undeveloped, uninteresting characters. Worthless childish tedium."
92 64% The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) - Rated 24 Jan 2009
"An awesome, Preston Sturges-esque meditation on the old debate between free will and predetermination, every possible reason you could want to watch a film is here. This film gets better on every viewing. Paul Newman and Jennifer Jason Leigh have powerful showings. The first film with Deakins working with the Coens."
