55 36% The Fast and the Furious (2001) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"A passable action flick with some breathtaking stunts - which look like stunts and not CGI. Good characters and the plot thickens enough at the end to create some real tension. But, ultimately, there's nothing new or moving or shocking enough to make this more than a one or two viewer."
83 83% Fargo (1996) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"If you're in the mood for clever and ironic (if not emotionally engaging) then this is it. The Cohen brothers reached their peak with this unsentimental film about human folly in the heartland."
30 16% Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"Zero excitement but some half-decent over the top battles, not a one of which was as thrilling as anything in T2, or any other James Cameron film for that matter. If you can't do it right, don't do it at all."
88 90% Blue Velvet (1986) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"A mesmerizing and truly frightening film whose power is diluted - only slightly - by an ending that doesn't quite fit. How ironic you think that ending is will determine how you take the entire film. Because if it isn't ironic, then either it verges on the sacharrine or it indulges in deep denial. Then again, what kind of ending could cap a film so bizarre and gleefully discomfitting?"
50 30% Ocean's Eleven (2001) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"Somewhat engaging, but ultimately hollow. These are clever, playful theives, but you get the sense that they are playing to themselves more than to the audience. The actors look like they are having a good time - too good for the circumstances - and I suppose we're supposed to feel lucky to have been invited. If there weren't big name actors joking their way through this thing, there'd be no reason to watch. Most of the performances are good, but in service of little more than an exercise"
57 43% Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"Funny as heck, but no real plot to speak of. It's great to see all these awesome actors together, but it doesn't add up to much more than a few very funny skits in a row. Still, Ferrell puts in another genius performance..."
23 10% Stigmata (1999) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"Stop moving the gol-darned camera!"
65 50% Cinderella Man (2005) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"Crowe is asked here to represent the hope of a generation that we can barely relate to any more. While we are rooting for him, it isn't always clear as to why. His personality traits make him a good person, but they don't allow him to represent something more that we can cheer for - a philosophy, a point of view, or a characteristic that can reach beyond the film, and cause a change in the audience."
71 63% Bloody Sunday (2002) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"You can feel the violence oozing from the screen."
77 76% The Abyss (1989) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"Great stock characters and a Speilbergian sense of wonder can't quite save the film from its own deux-ex-machina ending. Still, Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio put in excellent performances, and who could forget the excruciating CPR scene?"
