77 45% | The Fault in Our Stars (2014) - Rated 03 Jul 2014
"Pros: Strong performances from the lead actors greatly enhance the overall experience. A great (maybe even optimistic) view on the fleetingness of life, on living while waiting for death, and on how the death of a loved one affects the survivors. Cons: Dialogue can be overly cheesy. Idealized central relationship might demand a little too much suspension of disbelief."

54 15% | Godzilla (2014) - Rated 03 Jul 2014
"Pros: Great visuals. Creates anticipation successfully. Bryan Cranston. Cons: Excessive focus on uninteresting characters. Constantly aborts scenes with the monsters to build up to the (admittedly good) final battle."
|
55 25% | Thor: The Dark World (2013) - Rated 06 Apr 2014
"Pros: Amazing visuals. A handful of good scenes between Hemsworth and Hiddleston. Creative final battle. A few great jokes. Cons: Takes a long time to find its footing. Forgettable villain. Chooses a very predictable way to reunite the estranged brothers. Some jokes occasionally feel very out of place."
|
57 35% | Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - Rated 30 Mar 2014
"Pros: Likable protagonist. Nice visuals. Entertaining. Hits a few emotional marks right. Cons: Unremarkable villain. Poor script overall."

0 5% | Happily N'Ever After (2007) - Rated 07 Mar 2014
"Pros: There are none.
Cons: Stiff animation. Unfunny. Clunky dialogue. Terrible plot. Stupid characters. Not a single memorable scene. All movies out there seem better just because they exist in the same universe as this piece of crap."

90 75% | Her (2013) - Rated 06 Mar 2014
"Pros: Surprisingly sweet. Well-written dialogue. Great performances from Phoenix, Johansson and Adams. Intriguing vision of the immediate future and of romantic relationships.
Cons: Trails off after the climax. Somewhat underwhelming ending."
|
87 65% | Dallas Buyers Club (2013) - Rated 06 Mar 2014
"Pros: Interesting theme. Amazing performances from McConaughey and Leto. Great character development.
Cons: Succumbs to predictable drama in the second half. Insists on referring to its trans* female character as a "he"."

91 85% | 12 Years a Slave (2013) - Rated 06 Mar 2014
"Pros: Really great acting all around. Fittingly tense atmosphere. Effective use of silence. Makes the slow pace work.
Cons: More of an educational piece than an entertaining movie - but some (a lot of) people would benefit from watching it. Could use an extra hour."
|
80 55% | Frozen (2013) - Rated 06 Mar 2014
"Pros: Heartwarming sibling relationship. Surprisingly charming comedic sidekick. Outstanding character animation. Solid set of songs.
Cons: A little too in love with its own subversion of Disney tropes. So-so character design. Unnecessary villain."
|
92 95% | The Lion King (1994) - Rated 06 Mar 2014
"Pros: Classic opening sequence. Outstanding animation. A handful of amazing songs and a great score. Nice pacing. Emotionally engaging coming-of-age plot based on Shakespearean and biblical stories.
Cons: Stumbles a bit in the second half as far as character development goes."
