95 95% Traffic (2000) - Rated 12 Feb 2013
"From suburbia to the cartels of Tijuana, this movie shows just how far the arms of the drug trade reach. Was Traffic prophetic in its lines about futility in the War on Drugs or was it just publicizing it much better than real life actually could? If art imitates life then Soderbergh's film nailed it considering it depicts in a sense how life goes on through family...and baseball."
80 42% Young Adult (2011) - Rated 05 Jan 2013
"Charlize Theron ropes you in via her damaged Mavis Gary, the proto-hot-chick of yesteryear relegated to the first-and-last name treatment to anyone from the past that appears, with Patton Oswalt as the polar opposite working as the voice of reason. He may be speaking to a brick wall though, as Theron's true demons begin to show."
90 80% Boogie Nights (1997) - Rated 03 Jan 2013
"This is a characterized orgasm on celluloid. Beautifully shot by PTA, this is an ensemble cast that gets everything right. I only recently realized that Dirk is a re-imagining of John Holmes, and while this movie came before Wonderland, I will call this a bubblegum (in a good, roundabout way) version of that gritty and entertaining Val Kilmer vehicle."
75 33% The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - Rated 03 Jan 2013
"Is Bane better than The Joker? Does it matter? Well, yes, it does. You could understand The Joker."
90 80% The Social Network (2010) - Rated 03 Jan 2013
"Fincher runs the theme park, and Reznor/Ross take you on the ride. Sorkin built the track. "The dialog rubbed me the wrong way. It's too fast!" claim the 6 inept people who didn't like this movie."
85 59% Ted (2012) - Rated 03 Jan 2013
"As a big fan of Family Guy, I can say truthfully that while it works, I almost wanted a different voice for Ted at times. Even through the typical Family Guy fare of randomness (Flash Gordon), Mark Wahlberg is the perfect cast for Boston schlub John Bennett."
95 95% Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) - Rated 03 Jan 2013
"I'm not the utmost authority on documentaries. But what can you NOT like about this?!"
85 59% 21 Grams (2003) - Rated 03 Jan 2013
"The meet-by-happenstance trope has been time and time again, but this was one that even through some off speed editing really summoned some feeling out of me. Benicio Del Toro in one of his least eccentric roles that I can think of is as effective as ever, and Penn's loyalty to his woman-on-the-side in the powerfully emotional Naomi Watts is astounding once we see him encounter Del Toro's Jack. And just for good measure: Melissa fucking Leo."
63 7% Limitless (2011) - Rated 03 Jan 2013
"Limitless had me hopeful in it's first act, and did a good job at almost ridding my mind of the Phil-from-Hangover typecast looming over Cooper. But really, in a film that somehow I could truthfully say did not need De Niro, and whose Russian villain (a sputnik Jason Statham?) was just as much a placeholder, Cooper does get a chance to shine here and there. The pithiness though, and the horrible line saying it's not The Matrix, were enough to send me looking for a 144-minute mind ERASING drug."
85 59% Black Swan (2010) - Rated 18 Feb 2012
"From the score to Natalie Portman's challenged Nina, this film thrills and frightens in new ways. Aronofsky at his best just makes me pine for his next turn as a director."
