91 95% Shakespeare in Love (1998) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"Fantastic take on the life of Shakespeare in the development of his perhaps most famous play of Romeo and Juliet; intentionally fictionalized, it echoes the manner in which Shakespeare himself wrote his own historical dramas which would fictionalize motivations and developments in the life of actual historical kings. A wonderfully depicted setting that also does not slave itself to limitations within Elizabethan society of the time."
81 75% The Fountain (2006) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"A hugely stylistic film both in set design, cinematography, and unbelievable soundtrack by Clint Mansell; the movie ultimately suffers from a difficult to digest story structure as it jumps from fictional timelines within it's own story, to fantastic but confusing depictions of the future somewhat haphazardly strung together in the more common presented modern day setting. A difficult movie to unpack in terms of plot development, but worth the time."
55 5% Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"An original, but philosophy-bending take on the Star Wars mythos and universe; A well-made movie based on tension and pre-concieved audience supposition that fails to deliver anything meaningful or entertaining for the sake of creativity. A much higher, much more acclaimed movie had it not taken place within the Star Wars franchise."
68 15% Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"Fan-catering film in the loosely-tied together Askewniverse of Kevin Smith. Ironically, where the enveloped is pushed in this film mostly relies on the dialogue and out-of-frame implications, otherwise it is among the more tame "stoner comedies" especially of the time period. Fun movie for fans of the director and characters, but likely confusing and pointless to those unfamiliar with the established characters."
70 30% End of Days (1999) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"Exploitation style action film that takes all the classic American hero movie tropes and presents with a raw and uncensored style that echos the late-90s style of nothing off-limits entertainment. Sex, violence, and religious philosophy all depicted in the most visceral manner that will probably ever be seen from a major hollywood release - very unique subject matter for action star Arnold Schwarzenegger."
72 45% Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"Serviceable film that had little option in its production as it continued the Harry Potter franchise. It does a fine job condensing its source material into a digestible length, but gives very little creative freedom outside of the narrative it's based upon."
76 65% Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"Exploitation style action film that did a great job of featuring the Americanized evolution of Chinese society in a fantastic setting. The smarmy leading character with motivations outside of the main plot points gives the audience a great anchor point as the plot unfolds around an equally confused individual experiencing several new developments at once."
73 55% Speed (1994) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"Straight-forward action movie with a one dimensional, yet charismatic, leading man. More novelty than substance, as once the primary setting change and the stakes are altered, the movie loses a lot of its momentum before the end."
70 30% X-Men (2000) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"Good action film and adaptation of popular comic book/cartoon media; the plot feels arbitrary and the usage of some established character was disappointing, but overall a fun movie."
85 85% Pulp Fiction (1994) - Rated 19 Jan 2020
"Excellent film with compelling characters, relationships, plot development, and action presented with a raw yet deliberate style."
