"so a film about two old guys dying of cancer - sounds like a bad idea for a night out, but actually its a great idea for night out if you want a roller coaster, never been to a film where so many people in the audience laughed out loud and so many cried - but then it happens to have Jack Nicholson in it and maybe the only other actor around who he cant blast off the screen in Morgan Freeman. Be prepared to cope with cheesy' on a number occasions but I defy you not to mist up at least once."

"there arent many films you can sit and just admire for 2 and a half hours, but this is one - its beautifully put together, Brad Pitt is fantastic and Casey Affleck hypnotic. Probably its bit too fond of itself and once you are past the christ/judas thing there isnt that much substance - its more about wondering at the sheer craft of the actors and director than it is a joy at the experience of watching it"

"the plot idea seems to offer loads of space for jokes in translating disney cartoon world life to the real world, but in the end there were really only a couple, bit of a wasted opportunity - the kids we were with loved it though so..."

"bales out a bit on the complexity of the books, but the ideas in the books are legion and hard to do in film. Its beautifully visualised just similar enough and just different enough from our universe. wasted too much time in the fight sequence at Bolvanger which could have been spent building up to the daemon seperation sequence and the daemonless child scenes, both of which are agonising in the book"
