70 10% Sabotage (2014) - Rated 23 Nov 2014
"Excellently nihilistic and gory, but the pacing and story could be much tighter and the motivations could be fleshed out more."
99 96% Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) - Rated 22 Nov 2014
"A near perfect version of my favorite play. A loss of some quiet minimalism is almost made up for by a great sense of energy. RIP Mike Nichols."
80 30% Nightcrawler (2014) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
"This is one of the most unsettling movies I've seen in a long time. Had a surprising sense of humor, although the jokes do run awkward and pitch black."
80 30% The Guest (2014) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
"This is rad and dope with a killer soundtrack. Great performances and a ton of style."
45 3% Evil Dead (2013) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
98 83% Alien (1979) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
96 70% The Raid 2 (2014) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
"The differences between this and it's predecessor come from opening up the setting. This sequel has the whole city of Jakarta to play with, and the violence takes on a whole new level. The first movie had a stunning sense of claustrophobia, this one now has a beauty to it's violence that comes from imaginative set pieces. It also has a plot now, which unfortunately drags at parts. Still, it has strong themes, and explores the world of gangsters and humanizes the minor characters well."
79 16% The Evil Dead (1981) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
"The Evil Dead is a good movie, but not without flaws. The scariest of the whole Evil Dead franchise, the first one still has some moments of legitimate comedy. Even still, the first one is definitely trying to be a straight horror movie. It's main flaw is that it doesn't manage to be a particularly top tier one. It has a solid minimalism to it's dialogue, and at times the cacophony of screams, laughter, and other noises approaches The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but ultimately, this falls short."
98 83% The Raid: Redemption (2012) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
"Holy shit this is like my favorite action movie ever. It's plot is kind of barely there, but if you care about plot in movies you are a scrub. And besides, it works for what the movie is, and tells itself well. But the real draw of The Raid is the absolute beauty is brings to it's violence. The choreography is off the hook here, and borrows an intimacy from horror movies. Everything is claustrophobic and intense, and the martial arts is brutal."
95 63% Hot Fuzz (2007) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
"Easily the best of Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy, Hot Fuzz is a hilarious send up of fascist police action movies. Like most great parodies, Hot Fuzz has a genuine appreciation for the style it's riffing, and absolutely nails the style, creating a compelling action movie on top of it's biting comedy."
