90 50% The Truman Show (1998) - Rated 14 May 2012
"This is probably one of my favourite films - funny, slick, quick-witted and ultimately moving. I'm not a fan of Jim Carrey's comedy films, but I absolutely love his performance in this film. Watching the Truman show in 2012, it seems a lot less preposterous, with the influx of "constructed reality" TV shows like TOWIE. All in all well worth a watch."
50 12% Lifeforce (1985) - Rated 12 May 2012
"This was certainly unique. It's a very weird film involving giant spaceships, space vampires, and a the resulting zombie plague and harvest of souls. The acting is solid enough but I didn't feel I knew where I was with this at any point. It was like a long, creepy, somewhat gory, dream."
95 87% Black Swan (2010) - Rated 10 May 2012
"This film is so good that I watched it five times before letting Lovefilm have it back LOL. Extremely creepy, atmospheric, and so tightly written and plotted that there was literally never a dull moment. Natalie Portman is so fragile and luminous, her mother is so creepy. With all the reflections and hallucinations and the creepy soundtrack, it makes for a very jumpy film that draws one right in. A beautiful film too, a feast for the eyes. Loved it."
90 50% The Artist (2011) - Rated 10 May 2012
"The audience at the showing I attended was gripped from start to finish. It felt like going back in time to the golden age of cinema, the wonder of watching a film on the big screen. Surprisingly moving, had me biting my nails a bit at one point, and always luminous and delightfully funny. They don't make them like this any more - except they just did!"
80 37% Hugo (2011) - Rated 10 May 2012
"This is such a beautifully shot and executed film. I couldn't take my eyes off it. The ensemble cast gives a wonderful performance, and the whole thing is very touching and sweet without crossing over into schmaltz. The sets are gorgeous - I felt like I had been to Paris, stepped into Hugo's world. A truly magical film."
70 25% Life in a Day (2011) - Rated 10 May 2012
"A beautiful glimpse at life on earth, from the sublime to the ridiculous, from the everyday to the transcendental. The horror of the Love Festival crush, the fear in the eyes of a cow about to be slaughtered, the pain of a child whose mother has cancer ... and the joy of snuggling with one's children, watching a full moon, paying homage to the household Gods, all in one place. It was wonderfully cut and edited. My only gripe was that the final clip wasn't as strong as the rest of the film."
20 0% Contagion (2011) - Rated 10 May 2012
"I expected to be scared by this movie. I was actually bored. It was like watching the extended remix of a Health and Safety video. There was NO sense of the horror that should come with a massive outbreak. No one did anything. They were told what to do by those in charge, and they did it complacently. The dissenter turned out to be a fraudster who was making money off people's misery - but I didn't care enough about him for it to matter. The last few minutes were genuinely striking, though."
90 50% Benny & Joon (1993) - Rated 10 May 2012
"Funny, touching and engaging. Mary Stuart Masterson plays Joon as fiesty, intelligent and in control despite her illness, a beautiful performance. Johnny Depp is as watchable as ever. Uncomfortable enough in the right places, funny and touching in all the right places too. Some critics think it santises mental illness - I submit that it shows a person is more than their illness and can have love, happiness and a life they enjoy despite it."
