97 79% Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) - Rated 12 Nov 2016
"This stop-motion animation from Laika has beautiful cinematography and animation. The story is engaging but quite dark and sometimes the elements of humor injected to lighten the situation do feel a little forced. I would say this film is more suitable for adults and has a lot of deep messages about family and love which a lot of younger children would not appreciate. However, a wonderful film with some great voice talent."
84 20% Suicide Squad (2016) - Rated 03 Nov 2016
"This film is loud and annoying. DC have tried to cram too many characters into one film instead of building a believable plot based around characters that have some depth. This film is a montage of choppily edited scenes and relentlessly annoying background music. Jared Leto's character (joker) is totally forgettable. The director (David Ayer) has a very sporadic filming style which cripples the films cinematography."
88 29% Oblivion (2013) - Rated 03 Nov 2016
"This post-apocalyptic film has some exposition problems, and the way the story is told is a little clumsy. However, Tom Cruise gives a good performance. The cinematography and special effects are very good, and it has a great musical score by M83."
95 66% 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) - Rated 03 Nov 2016
"Directed by "Dan Trachtenberg" this psychological thriller is a sequel to "Cloverfield" It has brilliant performances from John Goodman (Howard) and Elizabeth Winstead (Michelle). The first three minutes of this film have no dialogue but the exposition is skillfully handled with a haunting musical score and beautiful cinematography. A very well executed thriller from a relatively unknown director."
94 54% Don't Breathe (2016) - Rated 03 Nov 2016
"This is a very suspenseful film with some good performances. Stephan Lang's character (The blind man) is portrayed well, as a desperate man who is psychologically damaged. The cinematography and sound design is very good, and some attempt is made to flesh out the main characters. The film relies more on psychological scares which set it apart from the usual Hollywood mix."
40 4% Thirteen Ghosts (2001) - Rated 02 Nov 2016
"This film is loud, badly acted and crass. The story takes place in a very futuristic haunted house, which looks like it should be in Grand Designs instead of a horror movie. The characters are two dimensional, and the ghosts are so over the top they are funny. Shawna Loyer's character (The angry princess) parades around in the nude revealing that even ghosts can have silicone implants. Despite the special effects this is a B - grade horror film."
100 95% Pan's Labyrinth (2006) - Rated 01 Nov 2016
"This dark fairy tail is beautifully told through the eyes of a young girl. It is directed by Guillermo del Toro and is arguably one of his best pieces of work. At its core is a film about redemption and sacrifice. It skillfully interweaves fantasy, historical drama and practical creature effects, creating a visually stunning film. The sound design is also beautifull, and adds another layer to this film."
90 37% Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) - Rated 30 Oct 2016
"I am a fan of the originals, and this film is good. with some solid performances. However, it feels like a repeat of the original Star Wars "A New Hope"! Although the cinematography is impressive, and the overall direction is better, the story is too similar, and feels like a sloppy attempt to rejuvenate the franchise. Adam Driver's character "Kylo Ren" is supposed to be conflicted but feels more like a spoiled child who keeps having tantrums."
45 12% The Blair Witch Project (1999) - Rated 29 Oct 2016
"This chilling film was marketed at the time as authentic found-footage of three film students who get lost in the woods while they are trying to make a documentary about the Blair witch. However, once you know it is just a huge marketing ploy there isn't much more to this film. The only real driving force are the actors, who's performances make this film seem credible and chilling."
98 87% Coraline (2009) - Rated 29 Oct 2016
"This animated film is adapted from the novel of the same name. Produced by "Laika" who are one of a handful of companies who still use Stop-frame animation, which attributes to this films unique look. Skillfully told and genuinely scary in places, this film speaks to adults and children alike. Complete with an ethereal musical score which really lends itself to this spooky animated classic."
