"A superbly scripted, breathtakingly beautiful, multi-layered epic. Some key plot points may appear to be contrived, but there is a lot more truth to them than one might imagine. The story has been inspired by the early life and career of the renowned visual artist, Gerhard Richter. A part of the inspiration came from stranger-than-fiction events in his life. PS: Some viewers may find its gentle pace and 3 hour plus running time to be daunting."
80 53% 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) - Rated 16 Feb 2021
"A Romanian movie that is gripping and disturbing. Contrary to what it may seem, this is not a pro/anti-abortion movie or even a political movie. It is about getting an abortion in a place and time that necessitated stealth and extreme caution. Consequently, the movie carries a much higher level of suspense than what one might imagine. This is further heightened by the director through his choice of framing and shot selection. Both the leads give remarkable performances."
80 53% I, Daniel Blake (2016) - Rated 16 Feb 2021
"A movie about survival in changing times, and about the value of common courtesy and of helping one another. It is a movie that will make you feel sad, angry, possibly scared. Yet all of this is tinged with warmth and even a bit of humour. The superb writing, characterizations, acting and direction elevate it to becoming a highly moving experience."
80 53% Charade (1963) - Rated 16 Feb 2021
"This has my vote for the most entertaining movie from the 1960s. It is an incredible accomplishment in the way it mixes romance and humor with mystery, violence and murders. It is superbly scripted with wonderful dialogue, a memorable score and unforgettable reaction shots. Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn light up the screen with their terrific chemistry."
90 90% Sweet Smell of Success (1957) - Rated 16 Feb 2021
"An unvarnished, unflattering look at the dark side of the world of entertainment press. Burt Lancaster is brilliant as a powerful, savage, cynical gossip columnist. Tony Curtis gives a career-best performance as a hustling press agent, desperate for success."
80 53% Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) - Rated 16 Feb 2021
"The movie's power lies in its exceptional script that throws up disturbing questions on the nature of justice, and accountability for war crimes. Despite being made over 50 years ago, and being rooted in events that happened over 70 years ago, it also offers a prism to view the events of recent years (Iraq, Libya)."
