92 77% The Prestige (2006) - Rated 02 Sep 2007
"A surprisingly intriguing film set in an unfamiliar world. Some of the accents of the leads leave a little to be desired, and some of the plot twists are painfully obviously signposted, however the film does have much in its favour. Despite some of the comments I've seen, I was actually rather impressed with the performance from David Bowie. It was nicely understated and probably his best since 'The Man Who Fell To Earth'. Oh and any film that puts Ms Johansson in a corset is a winner..."
99 93% Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) - Rated 02 Sep 2007
"About as funny as it is possible for a film to be. If you don't find something to laugh at in here, well frankly, you must be dead. Or French. Surprisingly cinematic in places for a film made with a total budget of about sixpence. It has a script that probably contains more jokes than have entered everyday English language than any other. Top-notch performances all around, particularly from Chapman who was a much better actor than he was ever given credit for. Top quote? "Run Away!""
100 97% Alien (1979) - Rated 29 Aug 2007
"I can't say all I feel about this film in 500 characters. Visually stunning even now, tightly plotted, and superbly acted. Realistic characters fight for their lives against cinemas most iconic monster. Genuinely shocking moments, a 'look' achieved before the invention of CGI that still influences Sci-Fi to this day. I can't see any chance of a better sci-fi film being made in my lifetime, unless Ridley Scott can be persuaded to re-visit the genre."
46 22% The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) - Rated 29 Aug 2007
"They goofed! Mis-cast - even down to the voice of Marvin, mis-directed, and unfunny. The HHGTG was the finest radio comedy I ever heard. It made for a mildly asuming book, a mediocre TV adaptation, and a totally underwhelming film. Only Stephen Fry as 'The voice of the book' retains a fraction of the sheer joy of the original. This could have been so much better."
96 85% 12 Angry Men (1957) - Rated 29 Aug 2007
"A taught, sweaty, piece of character driven story-telling. Not a second is wasted in this compelling masterpiece. A lesson in film making that shows how less can be more."
90 68% Videodrome (1983) - Rated 29 Aug 2007
83 50% The Rock (1996) - Rated 29 Aug 2007
"A ludicrous film, but enjoyable all the same. Full of whizz-bangs and one-liners. File along with Con Air as one of those 'guilty pleasure' films."
91 72% Life of Brian (1979) - Rated 29 Aug 2007
"Still funny, still edgy, still extremely silly. Pythons' finest hour? Only possibly. Even though the group themselves preferred this to The Holy Grail, it seems there is something still more surreal about that film. Some of this one seems a little disjointed and forced. The leads roles are fine, but some times the supporting characters steal the scenes. Look out for Terry Gilliam as a gloriously grotesque jailor to see a prime example."
79 43% AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004) - Rated 29 Aug 2007
"Better than it has a right to be. Some nice touches here and there with nods to the preceding films in the series. Die-hard fans of the Alien franchise can satisfy themselves that the directors made a real effort to hold on to some integrity whilst making what could have been a real stinker."
89 64% The Shining (1980) - Rated 29 Aug 2007
"A supurb piece of film-making by the greatest director of the latter half of the twentieth century, or ever-blown pretentious tosh drawn out from a hack horror novel, you decide."
