86 52% Homicide (1991) - Rated 21 Feb 2010
"The particularly Mamet-y dialogue is fantastic (I like his style). The story is interesting, and most of the characters are engaging. Aside from the typical good stuff, Mamet does his thing of leaving lots of plot unexplained. I'm bothered by this--I understand that these aspects of plot are insignificant at the end of the day, but it seems weird to just ignore them. I can certainly see this movie influencing both The Usual Suspects as well as Eyes Wide Shut."
87 56% Zombieland (2009) - Rated 14 Nov 2009
"Zombieland definitely surprised me. I thought it would be a forgettable addition to the peripherally-related-to-Apatow-somehow line of movies. Despite the fact that the main character makes sure he acts/sounds exactly like Michael Cera, this was a pretty good flick. I definitely laughed out loud quite a few times, and found myself noticing a lot of the more subtle inside jokes. The young-person romance angle was a little lame, but I guess it was needed. Woody Harrelson was hilarious as usual."
97 99% The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) - Rated 27 Oct 2009
"Haunting and beautiful. Scored as good as any movie I've seen. Even the supporting players are all fully fleshed out and exist in three dimensions. The voiceover is in no way cheesy. The pacing is slow, but deliberately and with purpose. I can't believe this fell so short of critical appeal--it's wonderful."
82 37% The Comedians of Comedy (2005) - Rated 17 Oct 2009
"Really nice to get an insight into some of the guys I absolutely admire now (particularly Patton). Some of the standup bits were flatter than I thought they'd be, but I really really liked seeing the real life side (Posehn's Simpsons figures, etc). Cool look behind the scenes that anyone should be able to appreciate."
90 74% The Battle of Algiers (1966) - Rated 17 Oct 2009
"A really quality movie that kind of blends nonfiction documentary with some individual stories acted out by pros. I found it interesting because of the complete lack of information that Americans are given on world events like this."
93 87% Bottle Rocket (1994) - Rated 13 Oct 2009
"By far Anderson's most original, and ultimately funniest movie. The fact that this launched him as a director, and both Wilsons to movie-stardom, should not be overlooked. Also, what first-time Austin-based director gets James Caan to do a full role in a film? Short answer: a pretty damn good one. This review sounds like I'm writing a blurb for Entertainment Weekly, but whatever. I loved this movie in 9th grade and I love it today."
75 18% Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1974) - Rated 06 Oct 2009
"I enjoyed watching this because it shows (even more) how derivative Tarantino can be. The film has a pretty standard sexploitation premise. The hardcore scenes are sudden and seem too "editted in." Overall it's interesting as an historic piece the most, and certainly has a badass appeal to it that one can't deny."
94 90% The King of Comedy (1982) - Rated 06 Oct 2009
"Have been putting this off because the premise seemed too cheesy. Honestly I liked it almost as much as Raging Bull. The characters weren't as developed, and I can't pin down why I liked it. The 1-dimensional sadness of the main characters was done so well as to lift itself above that single dimension. Jerry Lewis, however, was developed a bit more than I expected."
