Cool Hand Luke 95 - "What a great movie with Paul Newman. For me it's the best prison-drama and some scenes are really funny like the sexy carwash-girl. Super awesome !"

    #11562 - 6 stars for JooJoo's Review of Hud

Hud 6 - "The writing, performances, and photography are some of the greatest you can ask from a film. The theme of the changing west is played out flawlessly and Newman is his charismatic self, encompassing a bastard; a character that would normally dominate a film but becomes subdued by a formidable supporting cast. I can hardly find any fault in this, basically perfect."

#11563 - 6 stars for FrederikA's Review of Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland 50 - "The main problem with Burton's Alice is that it feels much more like a hired gig for Disney, than a labour of love. That said, it does manages to translate some of the madness from the book albeit the added action/adventure-aspect never really works. Some beautiful images kept me distracted enough to enjoy it though. Lastly, I know its Disney and all, but what the HELL is the deal with the end credit-hanna-montana'ish abomination of a song?"

    #11564 - 6 stars for JackDurden's Review of Zombieland

Zombieland 6 - "A film that remains entertaining in parts, but its attempts at emotional connection are contradicted by its harsh take on violence and gore. Its hard to feel any tension when the film is a comedy, you have that feeling that everything is going to turn out alright in the end. There are a few good laughs, but overall I'm going to say this movie is skippable. The constant reference to Twinkiees suits the film's structure. It's looks pretty good, but after you've had it, you feel empty and dirty."

#11565 - 6 stars for Farzan's Review of The Mirror

The Mirror 100 - "Really hard to follow everything that takes place in this film, but with repeat viewings, and a decent understanding of the narrative, you can realize that you are watching one of the greatest and most beautiful films ever made. Tarkovsky is truly a genius, his cinematography is incomparable. This film is something else, it has such memorable scenes, and such a big sense of grandeur. One of my favorite scenes is that of which he speaks of his repeated dream. Extremely unique. Unforgettable film."

    #11566 - 6 stars for TonythePony's Review of Hud

Hud 85 - "Newman you magnificent bastard! He's not cartoonish or villainous here, just self-centred and apathetic. All the characters are wonderfully realised: roguish, yet motherly and knowing (Neal), worn-down stoic (Douglas), all youthful sincerity (De Wilde). Impressively photographed and framed shots lends power to scenes of hardship. As pressures build a darkness takes hold and character interactions devolve from playful to cautionary to cutting."

#11567 - 6 stars for Der_Barney's Review of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 87 - "I'm conflicted about this one. I sometimes wish I hadn't watched it, but not because it's a bad movie - on the contrary: I kinda hate it because it is so effective. The documentary feel and the actors playing their inbred hick parts to the hilt together with the extreme violence (not gore, mind you!) made sure the movie got to me more than it should have, being "just a 70s slasher", which it turned out not to be. Think twice before watching."
  • alex_watkins

#11568 - 6 stars for Alex Watkins's Review of Winter Light

Winter Light 5 - "Downright depressing; a haunting examination of faith and religion that manages to be overwhelmingly bleak but never manipulative, and even borders on hopeful at moments. No other film I've seen has dealt with religion in such a despairing manner, and only Bergman himself has ever made another movie (that I've seen, anyway) that dealt with faith in such a profound manner."
  • kasperl

#11569 - 6 stars for KasperL's Review of Love and Other Drugs

Love and Other Drugs 55 - "Knowing Zwick as a very clumsy director, imagine my expectations for his take on the rom-com genre in a story about Jake Gyllenhaal, not my favorite actor to begin with, selling Viagra. Luckily, the script isn't half-bad. It, of course, adheres to text-book structures of faux obstacles but, while not exactly a fresh take, by undercutting clichéd moments (e.g., the "I love you" scenes), the film kept me interested. That, and Anne Hathaway got naked a lot."
  • eveelun

    #11570 - 6 stars for eveelun's Review of Munich

Munich 70 - "A decent thriller, with solid performances and some nice visuals. Despite all the controversy, I thought this was overly cautious and lacking subtlety. Spielberg hits you over the head with themes of futility, paranoia, and the omnipresent longing for home. The last hour was also drawn out too long and the story lost direction."
