This is what I want from a zombie show. Anyone can die at any moment and survival is everything. Plus the zombies are truly threatening.

In a market where we have become over-saturated with zombie/undead material, Black Summer does a lot to distance itself from it. It frequently highlights the less flashy flare of what we typically see. It's cinematography is disorienting, between it's long takes and shaky cam style, which is something we haven't seen much of aside from the 28 franchise. I don't think there is a product that captures the brutality of what a catastrophe would look like, better than this.

Black Summer's Rashomon-style storytelling and documentary realism offers a refreshing and exhilarating take on the otherwise tired zom-apoc genre. Show does a great job of portraying the brutal reality, ranging from slow-burn tension to frantic and breathless action to contemplative drama. Some of the set pieces put many movies to shame in terms of their slick orchestration. Loved the focus on characterisation amidst the chaos. Only fault is the wanky inter-titles which I recommend ignoring.

Finally a zobie-em-up that sticks to it's own rules, horror vignette structure really works and there are some wonderfully satisfying subversions of the usual Hobbesian bullshit.

Vignettes from the zombiverse. The obviously notable thing is the variety of techniques used, whether in terms of camera, sound, music, editing, action or storytelling. It seems that the filmmakers had some kind of artistic freedom, and tried to take maximum advantage of it. Nevertheless, the overarching narrative doesn’t really escape the limitations of the theme, which has now been over-used to an almost absurd degree.

"Black Summer" is a post-apocalyptic zombie series that is fast-paced and action-packed. While the plot is simple and the characters are one-dimensional, the show manages to keep you entertained with its intense and suspenseful scenes. However, the lack of character development and shallow storytelling leave you feeling disconnected from the story. Overall, "Black Summer" is a decent zombie show but falls short of its potential with its weak characterizations and plot. It's a 6/10 for me.

If there was ever a realistic zombie show in terms of how the people would really behave in the zombie apocalypse, then this is it. First season meanders a bit but the second season is really tight. And I love the fact that it takes them about a season and a half to even start figuring out they should aim for the head.

I can't say that the subject matter is original however think that Black Summer presents the fatigued "Zombie Apocalypse" genre in an interesting way. If you are a fan of zombies and characters pushed to their limits then Black Summer is an easy recommendation

Season 1 off to a good start. Season 2 really let's you down and the small "cue cards" just gets stupid and overused.

Some great camerawork in the first couple of episodes but it falls apart hard after that. I feel like the glut of shit-tier zombie media has set some extremely low bars. Really the whole show should have been about the cowardly guy failing to hit zombies in the back of the head and running away.

1st episode is great, 2nd is pretty good, 3rd is weak, 4th sucks, 5th sucks, and I won't bother watching the rest. Runs through its bag of tricks extraordinarily quickly, losing its vignette structure by the 2nd episode. Once it settles down and they're done introducing a new person every three minutes, it's disappointing. These characters are not strong enough to outlast the gimmick. 'Why would anyone do that?!' or 'That's fucking stupid!' were the key phrases while watching.

I rather like this show and I'm looking forward to the second season if there is one. The zombies are terrifying fast and powerful, though the survivors waste bullets like no other. Nothing but body shots until the last bullet is used, which makes it sort of cringy. Sometimes it does get a little wonky and "netflixy" though it's easy to look past it. Either way it's an interesting take on zombie apocalypse.

People do things erratically and commit mistakes that in a zombie apocalypse are completely nonsense. One episode in particular is everything but believable (the school with psycho children? Seriously?) . Direction and photography are good. I enjoyed it, but the only thing that remains after watching it is that Americans have a SERIOUS PATHOLOGICAL obsession with guns. EDIT: season 2 is a MASTERPIECE. s1 is a 72, s2 is a solid 90. Can't wait for s3 now.

Black Summer was fun from start to finish. It could go down as an isolated story within a world crumbling or an awesome foundation for a series where the struggle to survive will be difficult. It was well acted, kept the pace moving and kept things unpredictable and easy to follow. I enjoyed it. A simple minded story with the resolution you could get behind ; with a few really cool characters and off the wall scenarios that played out with cool effect on screen.
