Dragon Ball Z: A Final Solitary Battle! The Z Warrior Son Goku's Father Challenges Frieza
Bardock, a member of the lowest warrior caste of Saiyans, is cursed by a dying enemy into seeing the doomed fate of his planet and his race. To prevent these visions, Bardock plans a coup against his lord, Frieza. But hope might instead lie with his son, who was just sent to a lowly planet called Earth. (Summary by Mentaculus)

I'm not even going to pretend it's a good film, because it's not. However, it may be one of the best of the DBZ films, mostly because its' isolation from the series as a whole forces it to have a stronger character-driven story than usual. And its plot appears to be a traditional Japanese 'samurai rebellion' narrative, with whiffs of Superman and Star Wars - which is enough to hold the interest of anyone's Inner Nerd.

Probably the best DBZ film. Unlike nearly all the others (Gohan/Trunks the exception) it actually doesn't have to cram an irrelevant story into the continuity, leading to action utterly devoid of consequence. I mean, it's a prequel, so kind of, but I found it interesting enough and even kind of cool. There's some legitimately good stuff in DBZ that gets buried under tears and testosterone, and some of it shines through here.

i love bardock. i'd still want most of this canon. like the low class team surpassing the elites and bardock gonna pass king vegeta etc. i'll always remember the saiyans laughing at him. episode of bardock makes me like the psychic powers more, which they coulda tried to explain goku's psychic powers. love blood headband
