This made-for-television film constituted Bergman's first production of Strindberg's A Dreamplay - a play he would revisit three times more. Gunnar Ollén's Malmö crew was behind this, for its time, prestigious and costly theatre production, involving more than 40 actors and no less than 75 extras. (Ingmarbergman.se)

Ingrid Thulin might be the greatest actress of all time.

Some great performances - Thulin and Edwall in particular - and you can see why Bergman got so hung up on this play, but he struggles to adapt it for TV. Overly earnest, muddy-looking video, and his patented face close-ups just make everything needlessly confusing when he has to handle all these characters and interweaving scenes with no clear idea of how to do the transitions.

Written a year after The Interpretation of Dreams, Strindberg's proto-Surrealist play agrees with Freud that the dreamscape is a place outside of time and inhabited by contradictory and warring impulses. Bergman's TV production (here Thulin plays the observer Agnes, just as she will play another, similarly "observational" Agnes in CRIES AND WHISPERS) ably conveys a world in which man, born from dust and destined to return to it, in the meantime grows dusty. Alas for mankind!
