I watched the first episode twice, forgetting I'd already seen it. It was quite dull the second time too. It's too messy telling five seperate stories at the same time and seems to go out of its way to explain why the US tried to stay out of the second world war while at the same time being terribly concerned for everyone involved.

Interesting and well made. What more do you need from a documentary?

Fascinating insights from five great directors on five great directors (though Scorsese's absence is sorely felt) has broad enough scope for 5 x 3 hour documentaries, giving the film an occasionally rushed and skimpy feel, but it would seem disingenuous to carp over the treasure chest of gems provided here, including fascinating snap-shots of each director before, during and after the war. Kudos to Bouzereau for compiling and whittling this to a manageable size.

I wish this series would have spent three hours on Ford's time in the war (or Stevens or Wyler for that matter). Instead, we get a pretty shallow treatment of these guys and the work that they produced during and after the war. Disappointing.

What I enjoyed most was that this was presented through the eyes of the modern day directors. It gives insight into the original five's own mind, as well as a really nice way of showing their legacy. Also interesting to see how the experience of war had a different effect for each of them on their films. Definitely an important watch for lovers of film history.

Worth a look. The series will make you take a second look at some of their work through different eyes.

Mostly relied on the five contemporary directors talking about lives and careers of those five who came back. This structure makes it more compelling than just your average history doc, but transforms it in a collection of stories about cinema, its filmmakers and their experiences before, during and after WWII and how these memories forged their post-war personal lives and films. Del Toro represents the only point of true criticism toward the US propaganda films, though.
