Grandeur et décadence d'un petit commerce de cinéma
Série noire - Season: 1, Episode: 21 - All Episodes
One of Godard's least seen and simultaneously one of his most bitterly hilarious films. An absurdly brutal and minimalist examination of the desperate search for financial backing by two small-time filmmakers, 'Grandeur and Decadence' is knowingly self-referential, sad, and appropriately enough, a film shot on a miniscule budget in 16mm. Based on a novel by James Hadley Chase, with script by Godard. (Letterboxd)

A lot of it went over my head (I know next to nothing of the era it references), but I found it strangely fascinating. The use of music (apparently an homage to or spoof of the stylings of another director, and not a Godardism in itself) and the occasionally lyrical dialogue had enough to say that the scattershot structure didn't feel like an issue. The ending fell flat for me because I missed the set up to the climax and still have no idea what happened in the denouement. 42nd film of 2018.

Something about how popular entertainment is made on an assembly line. "The truth is an arrow, and the gate is narrow." I will cherish forever the scene where Jean-Pierre Leaud, in one of his best manic performances, rapidly pulls one sweater vest off, then pulls another on. Ditto the scene where Godard appears, and muses about cinema and Helsinki. One of those weird moments in his movies that manages to be both deeply moving and ironically detached. And, my God, the way he uses color bars!
