Crazy Diamond

I had wondered how long it would take before one of these episodes dove head first into some of that weird stuff that Dick wrote, and this one takes the cake. It's extremely hard to follow and feels like someone tried to smush together the a sickly feeling "Toys" (the Robin Williams movie) with "Double Indemnity." The noir parts are somewhat satisfying, but it's unnatural elements are unsettling in the same way as an android in the uncanny valley.

There is a lot in this episode, a load of Philip K. Dick's ideas and various dystopian futures mixed into one story, The story itself is enjoyable, very much inspired by film noir, and it wears this like a badge of honour (with one phrase in particular).

It's somewhat fitting that Buscemi stars in the weirdest episode yet. Behind the shiny surface of genetic modification and artificial human, the story is a human one of dissatisfaction and betrayal, with not much else to it. None of the characters are strong enough nor likeable enough to invest in.The entire thing falls victim to style over substance.
