I love 'Scream' (1996). After watching the pilot for this I decided against going further. Some time passed, and then I started thinking: I wonder who dies next... Who might the killer(s) be? I realized that I was hooked, and - although it's by no means a great show - I don't regret finishing the first season. I haven't made it though season 2 yet, though. (1,5 seasons)

Takes the main idea of the 1996 movie and crams it into a format where it isn't supposed to fit. One of the main characters even acknowledges that in the pilot episode, saying it's impossible to make a slasher TV series. This kind of self awareness is found all through the series, just like in the original movie series. The characters are behaving like believable teens (being really, really shitty to each other), This is Scream for the true crime podcast/viral video/binge streaming generation.

Season 1: Knowing that a Scream tv series was made, I got pretty mad. And then I gave it a shot. While hardcore fans of the franchise might find it a cheap knockoff, I found that even if it wasn't the best at imitating the tongue-in-cheek nature of the movies, the show entertained the hell out of me. The acting wasn't awful, and while the dialogue was pretty shoddy the overarching plot was interesting and paid off well. Good show and looking forward to season 2.

I'm kind of shocked to hear myself saying this about an MTV slasher series based on a 19-year-old movie that had already been followed by inferior sequels, but it's... kinda watchable! Like, I rolled my eyes at some stuff (the episode where the protagonist is seeing ghostly visions of dead people is particularly rough), but I genuinely got into it enough to want to know who the killer was. There's enough mystery in the backstory and good dynamics among the characters to keep it engaging.

Doesnt feel like Scream at all, if you remove the name card at the beginning and the horror fan character there's nothing reminiscent

Props to some of the writers of this show. It fully understands what it's doing and embraces it even with some flaws. The characters feel like actual characters, even if they seem kind of stereotypical. One characters has a very outcast, socially awkward vibe, but has many references to today's world and it makes me him by far the coolest character, he even pokes fun at the situation of the show. However, pacing and dragging out things is the show'a biggest flaw. Too inconsistent and mixed tone.

The second season in my opinion is better than the first, which is still fairly good. With the first film being my favorite movie ever, this show had a high bar to follow. At times it feels like the movies (the beginning of the first episode and the finale of season one for example). Most of the characters are interesting (I don't care for Emma), the dialogue has some clever moments, more character development than the movies, and the killer(s) is/are VERY easy to guess S1, a bit harder S2.

Weak sauce compared to the original film
