In the early hours of December 6, 1917, the Mont-Blanc, a French-owned freighter loaded to the gunnels with thousands of tons of TNT, collided with a Belgian relief ship and exploded in the Halifax Harbour. The explosion was so vast that it killed more than 2,000 people, injured 9,000 more and completely flattened two square kilometers of northern Halifax. Out of the carnage came stories of small sacrifices and great heroism. (rogersplus.ca)

As someone who grew up in Halifax, this was a topic that was shoved into our faces a lot in school and elsewhere - which explains why this film exists. That said, this film is heavily fictionalized and as such much of the drama is pretty lame and even ridiculous at times - did we really need a subplot about German spies in Halifax? Or make the French look incompetent? Aside from that, much of the plot struck me as very trite and boring, with much of cast feeling like their story is half-told.
