In 1926, famous evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappeared for six weeks. When she surfaced, she claimed that she had been kidnapped and held prisoner in Mexico. Others claimed that she was off carrying on an affair with a married man. This movie dramatizes the court hearing held to determine exactly what happened. (imdb)

Once upon a time, before the Lifetime network, TV movies were sometimes quite good. This is one - very well-written and directed, and it looks great (it was no great surprise to see that the beautiful costuming was done by Edith Head). Dunaway's style of slightly-crazed histrionics seems to me perfect for the character, and Bette Davis is fantastic as her hard-as-nails mother. A reminder that scandals involving evangelists seems to be in the American DNA.
