The first half is a touching portrait of two girls affected by a tragedy. I think this half is stylistic the most interesting. The second half it conveys very well how it's to be trapped in an abusive relationship. In many similar movies I often get agitated by the protagonist about why they don't step out of this relationship. But in this one I rationally I understood also that this would be the correct move, but emotionally felt as trapped by him.

A compilation of Sion Sono tropes. No extraordinary experience for an informed viewer, but nevertheless a satisfying descent into absurdity and sexual deviance. It was difficult to understand any of the characters motivations and actions. Then I realized the actual case behind the film is about 10 times more brutal. After this, electroshock torture sex almost seems like reasonable behavior, so be warned.

there's a legitimate possibility that unsuspecting middle-aged couples in search of a lazy, romantic saturday evening in front of the TV might stumble upon ‘the forest of love', a netflix production by sion sono and a no-holds-barred psychotic abomination, a writhing stew of every one of his twisted obsessions completely without restraint, discipline or taste. what a time to be alive.

Filming, killing, drinking, singing, shouting, fucking and desmembering, cooking and doing other crazy, nasty shit with dead bodies. It would have been way better if lasted 90 minutes or so.

Touches upon many of Sono's favorite themes, such as messed up family dynamics, abuse, brain-washing and filmmaking. Probably not the best entry point to his work, but definitely worth checking out for his fans.

Just when I thought I'd seen it all, Sion Sono reaches a new level of anarchistic insanity.

A Sono's greatest hits album that struggles to be the sum of its parts. At least Sono continues to draw strong performances out of actors playing against type and from newcomers in their first major film role, so there's that to enjoy for fans of his films.

Both Sion Sono and Futoshi Matsunaga were born in 1961, and this fictionalised retelling of the latter's story somehow draws them together through the thought that cinema is life and life is cinema, or in other words a place in which dreams and nightmares can be made real. Such is the power of dreams, which, unbound from any constraint, can reach unimaginable depths of inhumanity, the events depicted on screen here being no more brutal or deranged than the crimes on which they are loosely based.
