"She would cry everytime she saw footage of the towers falling" from that line onward I was laughing. I eventually had to leave the theatre because i was going to have a panic attack if I didn't stop laughing.

In which Vallée tries to make his Eternal Sunshine about grief and the result is a stupid collection of vignettes about an American mid-class white man doing some uh-so-crazy stuff to ~understand~ his loss and sets himself apart from everyone and everything (job at finance, shiny suburban house) from his previous life by being honest and shit, and when the demolition ends he can finally cry about it, suffer a little bit and then move on. Also: worst poster ever and wtf was this Naomi character.

Something was missing. Performances were way too right. No problem about that. However, the characters were not that deep. One-dimensional characters are the majority of this film. You want to see more and more dramatic scenes -I mean the real ones not that weird dance sequences on the streets- but instead you put up with chocolate commercials..

The best part of the story was the darkly mystic second act. A little bit after the half of the movie the mystery was solved and the very end left empty feeling. Lots of good, twisted moments but all in all I expected better. Well thought title.

Gyllenhaal does his best to find the fun and the feeling in Brian Sipe's quirk-riddled script. But director Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) keeps pounding the point that Davis must destroy his old self to build a new one. It would be funny if it wasn't so profoundly unprofound.

But that's not the only thing that's messy in this R-rated movie. Asking a 12-year-old to shoot you, for instance, cannot be thought of as clean in any way, shape or form. And clumsily coaching that same boy to simultaneously embrace homosexuality and obscure it--well, that leaves no hope at all of him healthily sorting through his sexual confusion. And it nearly goes without saying that it doesn't point him to a biblical (pluggedin.com)

"so my wife got killed in some freak accident, but i'm not gonna sue the shit out of the guy responsible, no, i'm gonna rethink my life, be completely honest to everyone, starting with a lower class employee who actually works for her money (which i won't look down at her for) and form an intimate bond with her and her gay kid, all the while recognizing the stuff i've been missing out on while making shitloads of dough." - said no investment banker ever. still a nice enough fantasy.

Pleasantly surprised that this movie pulled together into an enjoyable whole and an emotionally resonant ending. The characters are idiosyncratic and weird enough that it could have easily become annoying, but the cast (especially Gyllenhaal) does a great job and the dark humor keeps the whole thing grounded. The music is excellent as well.

Fucking, (yes, using it right) masterpiece. The second time I watched this it was even better... a slow demolition of the main character's mind in coping with the death of his wife. He meets a mother and her son and really connects with them in super interesting ways. After seeing this the 2nd time I already want to watch it for a 3rd time :D "CRAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy on you!!!" - genius song. I love everything about this movie.

"Everything is a metaphor," says our lead early on, setting a tone uniquely free of pretentious subtlety for this intriguing, well-acted study of grief ripe with satisfying symbolism (the recurring dancing and demolition are two highlights), artistically crafted with a great soundtrack and sharp editing. Davis' meandering, deeply personal journey at the center of it all evokes both titters and tears, despite a few unnecessary tangents (his happenstance graveyard meeting comes to mind).

Demolition (2015) An odd little film from Director Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers' Club, Wild) and screenwriter Bryan Sipe, Destruction does not deliver the intensity of Vallée's aforementioned works. Shot like a semi-documentary, Demolition follows the destructive psyche of the protagonist, Davis, as he recovers from the death of his wife from a car accident, from which he emerged unscathed. Davis is an investment banker who works for his father-in-law, Phil (played by (Chis Cooper) and

A nice little surprise that I didn't know anything about going in. Gyllenhaal successfully portrays a grieving husband losing his shit, and find release in odd forms. A good job from Cooper, Watts and Judah Lewis.

Get Jean-Marc Vallee more work, immediately. It might tiptoe that melodramatic line, but I'll be damned if I wasn't hooked right from the get-go by this. Watching a character go from being so maintained, to truly finding himself for the first time in a kind of disestablished hedonism, and to watch the story unfold under such a steady and measured directorial hand... this is destined to be among my favorites of 2016. Props too to a spectacularly-selected cast that brought out the most from this.

A movie about dealing with grief that is unbalanced in tone and sometimes feels surprising while other times resorting to cliches. Made watchable thanks to some standout performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and child actor Judah Lewis. Naomi Watts does what she can with an underdeveloped character with the sole purpose of pushing along the lead. It's funnier than expected, and most of the humour works, intentional or not.

Demolition lives up to its name, mostly in a good way. Dark-ish humor, But it doesn't justify the obscure ending. I think Gyllenhaal took this role for the range it allowed him to display, and it does keep him at the top of the heap of male actors for me.

Definitely give props to Jake here, and I gotta say that this movie was not really what I expected. The trailers made it seem tame and it's actually a little unhinged -- which I liked. It was interesting enough to keep me engaged even if it didn't go above and beyond; the transformation of this guy was intriguing. It had reoccurring and powerful symbolism, and the discussion of using the word "fuck" too much was glorious. A surprise for me, even if I'm not madly in love with it.

Follows pretty closely the usual man-overcomes-trauma narrative, with some added flavors such as a nice soundtrack, occasional dark humor, and good acting by Gyllenhaal. Also liked the kid.

Güzel bir psikolojik-dram filmi. Jake Gyllenhaal hali hazırda favori aktörlerimden biri ve bu rolde de yeteneğini konuşturuyor diyebilirim. Yer yer duygusal yer yer komik ve içten bir film.

How to deal with a wife's death? That's what we witness Jake Gyllenhaal going through in Demolition (2015). Some of it is good crazy. Other stuff is just thrown in there for reaction and in a way the whole denial thing gets worn-out after a while. Definitely could have used clearer mood changes or went for the plot twists earlier in the game to put them to better use. But overall a humorous weird way dealing with death.

This was trying to be another American Beauty but felt a little uneven and the ending was too simple yet a little unclear. Some good acting, and some really unnecessary but entertaining montages will get you through it.

Tragedy strikes a financial professional and knocks him out of the hamster wheel of the material world, for good. Without fail, when you start noticing the squirrels, shit is about to get real. I'm a sucker for any story about grief, and this is a pretty good film about grief. Similar to Philip Seymour Hoffman's Love Liza but not quite as cohesive, poignant, realistic or relatable. It's worth noting that it's difficult for me to see Jake Gyllenhaal's characters as anyone other than the actor himself, despite his skill.

The exact same movie as Wild - at least in terms of premise and editing - only Gyllenhaal goes full crazy instead of backpacking. Begs the question why his character waited for the demise of someone he hardly cared about to rethink his life in the first place, which makes for a detached viewing experience from the get-go, and the movie seemingly condoning his obsessive stalker behaviour didn't exactly improve it either.

throughout it seemed amazing and showing with great acting, but after it ended it seemed there was no substance to it at all apart from the bent kid which they seemed to just add, for the sake of adding a bender in. and then on top of that they all think its fine that his dead wife was cheating on him the whole time and yet the widower still wants to create legacies for her? but ill say its worth watching for the dancing scene

Gyllenhaal's character is cold, but relatable. There aren't enough surprises for a character study such as this. Some sort of puzzle element is missing, which leaves the ending unearned.

"Demolition", starring an unsurprisingly really good - and very fittingly cast - Jake Gyllenhaal, can get a little baffling in both its content and execution, yet it's certainly intriguing throughout, occasionally even unexpected. Funny and life-affirming moments are present, and so are promising subplots, which unfortunately are often left unexploited. But what really holds this back is that, for all its off-kilter traits, it somehow fails to avoid cliches and ends up feeling kind of contrived.
