I like the idea of following the full supply chain of the drug trade, but this film really fails at connecting its many, many individual pieces into a coherent whole. Marketing it as a Nicolas Cage movie seems like fraud.

In imitation of Tarantino/Guy Ritchie, Running with the Devil bores with cardboard characters, a recycled plot, and overall groan-worthy sensibilities. I wanted to care about everything that happened here, but I was never given a reason to.

It helps to go in with low expectations for this movie. The script had some good and some bad moments but there were some structure problems. The cast do good work here, they are better than the script. Overall I would recommend this movie.

There are far, far better films about the drugs trade. The story about the journey of the drugs was fine, and I thought the cast was okay (Cage really kept a lid on it, which may be a good or bad thing). It really just lacked any real style, tension or impact, and the ending wasn’t really engaging. Might pass the time if you’re bored.
