"Un Chant D'amour" (Jean Genet, 1950)

Greatest. Movie. In. History.

Translates to "A Song of Love" in English. This short film about two male prisoners who fall in love was highly controversial when it was first released and was subsequently banned and even disowned by Genet. It broke new ground for its sexualised atmosphere, homoerotic content and explicit male nudity which was and still is considered pornographic to this day. In my opinion it's the single greatest, most artfully beautiful, deeply arresting, historically important and daring cinematic experiment in all of cinema. There has never been anything like it before and there never will again. It is the French writer Jean Genet's first and only film to date, who before had written the novel Querelle de Brest. Not for all.
