Beyond Clueless

It lacks the immediate depth and analysis I was expecting - more of a teen movie bricolage than an essay or documentary - though it makes interesting observations even when it doesn't flesh them out thoroughly (and plots an odd timeline that avoids some obvious choices in favour of repeatedly visiting things like, erm, 'Disturbing Behaviour'). The real joy is in the brilliant editing and score, and Balk's captivating narration.

While the analysis is neither groundbreaking nor earth-shatteringly deep, the editing and sound design is pretty dope and the scope of teen movies included is impressive.

A blissed-out dream of the teen movie. Compelling video-essay which feels near transcendental at points, which is surprising considering the footage itself.

Not what I was expecting. This feels like a wasted opportunity. Rather than providing any insight into or analysis of its subject matter, Beyond Clueless feels more like 90 minutes of trailers for a bunch of 90s flicks.

The title really is a bit of a misnomer, seeing as how for the most part Lyne avoids any actual in-depth analysis of the material at hand in favor of basically reiterating broad themes already made clear none too subtly in the films themselves, in effect less of a critique than what ultimately amounts to a Gen Y nostalgia reel (let's just say he's no Zizek, or Thom Anderson or Mark Rappaport for that matter). Still, there is some nice editing in parts and the soundtrack is not too bad either.

When the title says "Beyond Clueless", it means the movie will take you in a journey through some lesser-known - not necessarily good - teen films to explore the genre. It might or might not be your cup of tea. I liked it!
