Full-Length Reviews Have Come to Criticker
Published 21 Jul 2025

We're really excited to announce a big new feature to Criticker, which users have been asking for ... since we went online. Finally, we've introduced the ability to leave full-length reviews on our titles, when the 500-character mini-reviews simply aren't enough to completely express your opinions.

You'll see a prompt to write a Full Review, whenever you rate a title (or edit an existing rating). If you've already provided a rating, your score will be brought over to the Full Review page. And if you've already started typing a mini-review, the full review will pre-populated with that, but it can be overwritten.

Other things to know about Full Reviews:

  • Reviews that existed previously in the "Full Reviews" section of the forums have been brought into the new schema -- we've tried to make sure the formatting is valid, but please let us know if something is missing! We'll be alerting all the users whose full reviews have been moved in this way.

  • Full reviews are completely separate from mini-reviews. One doesn't necessarily mirror the other. However, if a mini-review isn't supplied, the first 450 characters of the full review will be used for it.

  • Full reviews must be at least 500 characters in length (otherwise, they should be mini-reviews), and they cannot exceed 20,000 characters. That should be enough, since it's about 12 pages of standard, double-spaced text.

  • Any time a rating has a full review, a link will appear at the end of the mini-review.

  • Simple formatting is allowed: bold, italic, underline, and strike-through. Images are not yet allowed, nor are hyperlinks.

  • A spoiler tag is available, so that you can warn people about potential reveals before they start reading your review.

  • Just like mini-reviews, you'll be able to star, share, and report full reviews. Starring is done on the "rating", so if you star a full-review, you're also effectively starring the mini-review.

  • We don't have a page which lists all full reviews, though this will be introduced soon

We hope you like this big new change to Criticker! Over the years, we've had a lot of feedback about the lack of this feature... it was the reason that many people decided to not use the site to begin with, so hopefully we'll be able to attract a whole new set of film fanatics, whose thoughts and opinions are more detailed than 500 characters allows!

As always, if there are any issues or mistakes, please let us know!

Wait, wait! A couple of other changes were introduced as well!

Better Filtering for Title Types - Criticker's various title types have always been in need of house-cleaning -- think "TV Series", "Short Film", "Straight-to-Video", etc. Well, we've now cleaned this up, and changed order of the options, and the way in which they're displayed on the Title Database. The new update makes it clear that all are selected by default, but you can easily clear them, and select just "Films", for example. Or "Films" + "TV Mini-Series". Whatever you want!

Cursor at End of Rating on Edit - A little quality-of-life improvement here. Previously, when you edited your rating, the cursor was placed at the beginning of the number. Like "|74" (if "|" represents the cursor). Now, it's at the end ("74|"), which makes hitting the backspace just a bit easier.
